Lab questions (Indent and provide an answer in a complete sentence, 20 points in total)
Questions from lab tutorial
Question 1
Why is it all right to use a space in a map name but not in a folder or feature class name (2
points)?
Using a space in a map name would not affect the file or the data, however using a
space in a folder or feature class name would cause an error to pop up that won’t let you
move on until the space is removed.
Question 2
Which data types are found in oregondata.gdb (3 points)?
The oregondata.gbd contains 2 features datasets which are transportation and
water.
Question 3
Notice that if the term
layer
is used in the instructions, then you are directed to use the Contents
pan. If the term
feature class
is used, then you are directed to the Catalog pan. Explain why (2
points)?
Layers exist in the ArcMap and are managed by setting the properties in the table of
contents while feature classes are stored on a disk and can be managed by ArcCatalog.
Question 4
What is the key difference between these two tools (2 points)? Which is the correct one to use in
this case, and why (1 point)?
The difference between the contents pan and the catalog pan is that the contents pan lists
all the layers and tables in the map or scene and shows how the features are represented
1
while the catalog pan is used to add items to a project as well as view, create and manage
items. We would use the catalog pan in this case since we want to manage items.
Question 5
Why do the districts and the state boundary layers have different boundaries (1 point)? Why is
the state boundary so different from the base map boundary for New Jersey (1 point)?
The districts and the state boundary layers have different boundaries because they
come from different sources that require different scales. The state boundary is different
from the base map boundary for New Jersey because the state boundaries are drawn and
defined by the federal government while the base map just approximates these boundaries.
Question 6
What would happen if you clipped the
njdistrics
layer with the
njbound_gen
layer instead of
using the Feature Class to Feature Class tool (2 points)? Why would the results be a problem (1
point)?
Clipping the njdistrics layer with the njbound_gen layer instead of using the
Feature Class to Feature Class tool would result in the original boundaries being replaced
into random places. The results would be a problem because the boundaries used would be
less accurate.
Questions from practice exercises
Question 1
Create a map for Oklahoma including at least two additional feature classes for the geodatabase:
county boundary and interstate. Label the county with its name. Use a wider line for the state
boundary than the county boundary (5 points).
