2-2 SPECIAL FEATURE ASSIGNMENT MAJOR2 1. How is the energy received at the top of the atmosphere and cycled through the Earth’s climate system? a. The energy from sunlight reaches Earth’s atmosphere and then moves through the climate system in a cycle. The diagram I illustrated attempts to explain how sunlight warms our planet, and this energy becomes trapped as it flows through the Earth’s surface as infrared radiation. The weather and climate patterns on Earth are influenced by the amount of solar radiation and energy, as well as how it is distributed across the Earth's surface. Even though the sun is located 93 million miles away and generates temperatures as high as 27 million degrees Fahrenheit, by the time its energy reaches
2-2 SPECIAL FEATURE ASSIGNMENT MAJOR3 Earth, some of it is reflected into space by clouds, and some is absorbed by the atmosphere. 2. What are the major factors that influence radiative forcing? a. Radiative forces are the immediate change in the net amount of energy at the tropopause caused by climate change, such as changes in greenhouse gas concentrations. We measure these forces to ensure that Earth’s energy is balanced. At this moment in time, there seems to be more energy entering the atmosphere than leaving it, thus causing an imbalance. Greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide and methane, play a major role in this imbalance.
