How might the way climate change is discussed in the
media and by politicians influence climate change
research and funding for that research?
Good day everyone,
How the media and politicians discuss climate change can have a major influence on what is
being researched and the funding for it. For example, while I can’t speak for everyone, most
people aren’t checking science daily for news updates regarding climate change. We learn
most of what’s going on in the world from the media and the politicians holding press
conferences. If the media and politicians aren’t making climate change an important issue,
it's less likely that more funding and energy would be put into the research of climate change.
Hong Vu, assistant professor of journalism at KU stated “
media can tell people what to think
about. At the same time, framing can influence how people think about certain issues. Not only
can framing have an impact on how an issue is perceived but on whether and how policy is
made on the issues.”
How can bias, beliefs, assumptions, and values influence
what we know and how we approach contemporary global
issues related to the natural sciences?
Bias, beliefs, assumptions, and values can have a significant impact on how we approach
global issues that relate to natural science. Being biased can make it difficult to see
something from a different perspective. Assumptions fall in line with being biased because
assumptions are influenced by prejudice and beliefs. For example, I am a firm believer that
we are destroying the Earth causing most of the global issues. This is my belief. Which makes
me biased to believe that climate change is not a major issue going on in the world. It is
important to value the Earth and nature even if you don’t believe in climate change or that
it’s that bad. With value comes better care. If people valued Earth and nature on a higher
scale, we would take better care of the planet.
