Classroom Map for 2nd grade. The learning objective is for students to be able to read a
map and a map key and create their own map of the classroom. Materials that would be
needed for this activity Class set of Using a Map Key worksheet, Paper Crayons, markers,
or colored pencils. For the introduction Ask students if they've even seen a map before
and if they can share with the class what they are for. Find out what students have read
a map. Ask students what they know about maps.
During guided practice I will pass out
a reading map worksheet as a class we will complete it together. For independent work
the students will create maps on a blank sheet of paper, and they will include a map key.
They will be able to walk around the classroom to get a better view of the class. To help
support struggling students I will allow them to pair up with other students who may
struggle during independent time.
Landmarks Scavenger Hunt for K-1st. The standard is SL.K.5. The learning objective is for
students to identify different types of landmarks in their neighborhood. The materials
needed for this activity are markers, pens or colored pencils, landmarks worksheet, and
paper. The lesson will start with a short field trip where we walk around a neighborhood
and identify different landmarks. I will draw different landmarks and have students
brainstorm details about each. The students will then work by themselves or with
partner for diverse learners and create different landmarks they noticed. They will then
present it to the class.
History
Learning about Black Visionaries 1st-2nd. The learning objective students will be able to
create opinion pieces and research black visionary using books and online resources. The
common core standards are RI.1.1, RI.1.4, W.2.2.
The materials needed are a A-Z African
American visionary poster, note taking paper, any type of technology, construction
paper, poster boards, coloring materials, and paint. To start the lesson students with be
in a group and I will tell them they are going to research on an important black person
who has helped to make the world a better place. I will ask students to share their ideas.
Clarify that when we research something, we learn more about it using resources, like
books, articles, and videos. For diverse learners I will do a teacher led research and I will
use assistive technology for read aloud text.
Learning About Du Bois. 2ND -3RD . Standards L.2.4.E, L.3.2.G, W.2.8. Learning objective
students will be able to compare the most important points presented by two different
sources and Students will be able to participate in shared research and writing projects.
Materials needed is a video about Black History about W.E.B Du. Bois, note taking paper,
online and printed picture of W.E.B. Du Bois, large piece of chart paper split into two
columns with the headings "Things We Learned from the Video" and "Things We
Learned From the Text" large posterboards for each group of 3–4 students, coloring
materials, access to online devices and computers. During the lesson I will explain to the
students that today we are going to learn about a very famous black American named
W.E.B. Du Bois. The students will share their ideas of who this person may be. For guided
practice the students will look up different vocabulary words. Students will be put in
small groups of 3–4 students, pass out a piece of posterboard and coloring materials,
and students will use online devices they will include a picture of W.E.B. Du Bois, two
facts about how W.E.B. Du Bois was a change-maker. Diverse learners can work in a
small, teacher-led group as they create their posters and also they can use assistive
technology.
