PHY 105 Module Four Google Earth Exercise: Mass Wasting Questions: When did this mudslide occur? While you may not be able to pinpoint the exact moment in time, you should be as specific as possible, paying close attention to the image dates. What direction did the slope failure send debris? This mudslide was between 3 and 8 PM and occurred on 4/29/2005. Debris was sent in the southern direction by slope failure. Questions: What major geologic feature did this mudflow affect? How is the feature already responding to the addition to sediment? The Stillaguamish River was affected by the mudflow. Due to erosion, the river has changed to what it was before the landslide Question: Based on evidence you can see in the surrounding landscape; do you think they were being honest? Due to the river flowing through a valley, there is a chance that a mudslide might occur. They were not being honest. Question: Zoom in and move your view around until you see the starting point of the slope failure. What is the latitude and longitude of the starting point? (Hint: Hover your mouse over the point you believe was the starting point, and the latitude and longitude will show up on the bottom of the screen. Make sure you have Tour Guide turned off to see this.) 40 degrees N, and 112 degrees W. Question: How much of a distance did the landslide impact? The landslide impacted approximately half of a mile.
Questions: Did you find any other evidence of other events? Where are they located with respect to the large event? (Hint: Once you have located them, zoom out so you can see the entire mine and use the compass in the upper right corner to help you answer.) There looks to be another mass wasting event toward the southwest corner of the mine. Question: When did the avalanche occur? Hint: You should be able to narrow it down to a less than 11- day range. The avalanche occurred between 30 Dec 12, and 12 Jan 13. Questions: What is the topography like around the area where the event initially occurred? Do you think this impacted what happened? What about the rest of the topography lower downslope? The initial topography of the incident was a steep mountainside slope. Due to the steepness, the terrain had an influence on what transpired since rocks would have gained speed as they descended the slope. The lower downslope's topography was less steep and flattened out. Question: How far downslope did material fall from the initial failure point? The material fell approximately 1.15 miles from the initial failure point.
