Name: Omara Hasson Instructor: Prof. Xenia Conquy Course ID : Unit 5 Assignment Student Word Document Note: Submit this document as either a Word Document or PDF file to the Unit 5 Assignment Dropbox on D2L by the due date to earn credit for this assignment . Unit 5 Assignment Part 1 : Write a letter to city officials to discuss the potential for switching to Renewable Energy resources in your new city. Below, you will view the "Potential" maps for many types of renewable energy resources. Using these maps as a guide, discuss which types of renewable energy sources would be appropriate to research in your letter . Then, do a quick search online to see what types of renewable energy resources are currently being used/researched in your chosen city. Discuss this in a short discussion below your letter . LETTER : Good afternoon, New York City officials , My name is Omara Hasson-Hernandez and I am writing this letter in an attempt to present to you potential plans for switching New York City to more sustainable methods of energy. I would also like to explain exactly how this method will prove to be better for the city and why it is the most appropriate. Renewable energy is energy that does not die out once used, but can instead be regenerated. The types of renewable energy sources and solar, geothermal, wind, biomass, hydropower, and hydro (NPD). When thinking for New York City, the renewable resource that could offer the most potential is inferred to be hydropower. New York City is by a great lake and can use it to make their power hydroelectric . Switching to nonrenewable resources like hydropower would be much better than the in-city plants that run on gas or fuel oil, which are nonrenewable resources. It will also be way less costly for the city and residents . DISCUSSION : New York City is on a mission to ensure that the energy that they are using to be from at least 80% renewable resources. Most of the energy used now comes from fossil fuels that pole the air, reducing air quality and increasing greenhouse gases. Solar power alone will not help them achieve 100%, but creating wind plants upstate and using renewable energy resources from water electricity has proven to help. I did not know that Lake Erie and Lake Ontario are already producing a large amount of hydroelectric power for the city, which was great to find out. Hopefully the city can continue at this rate to eventually only use 100% renewable resources .
Unit 5 Assignment Part 2 : 1. What are the major hurdles of building solar plants and other renewable energy resources? A major hurdle to building solar plans and other renwable energy resources is that solar energy is not as prevalent everywhere, not everyone gets the same amount of sun. Because of availability of the sun and location, it could be difficult to save energy this way for all of mankind. 2. What is one solution to the energy transportation problem? One solution to the energy transportation problem is to simply input small plants on the various locations that land on the route of transportation. 3. Answer the question posed by the video: Can 100% renewable energy power the world? I believe that 100% renewable energy can power the world if all renewable energy were to be produced at such high levels to accommodate for the large scale of humans on Earth. Building plants that accommodate to the location ( for example, wind plants in the mountains and valleys but water electricity plants on coasts.) If there were many tailored, small plants like this for each city/state, then yes the problem could be solved. Unit 5 Assignment Part 3 : Questions (to be answered on your answer sheet :( Calculate the circular cross-section of the Deep Water Horizon pipe: 346.6 sq. in . Calculate the volume of oil exiting the pipe every second: ______7275.6________ cubic inches/second (hint: this involves multiplying a linear rate of inches per second with the cross section ( Calculate the volume of oil exiting the pipe every minute: _______436,600_____________ cu. in/minute Calculate the volume of oil exiting the pipe every hour: _______26,195,400________________ cu. in/hour Calculate the volume of oil exiting the pipe every day: ____628689600______________________ cu in/day Convert cu in/day to cubic feet per day: ____________363,825__________________________ cu ft/day Convert cu ft/day to barrels/day (5.61 cu ft/barrel of oil): ______2,721,600___________________ bbl/day (Note: bbl is the abbreviation for ‘barrels (’
Multiply bbl/day x 86 days: ____234,057,600_____________________________= total barrels of oil leaked . Calculate the gallons of oil leaked: ________642.936___________________= total gallons of oil leaked (There are 42 U.S. gallons in a barrel of oil .( Respond: Review chapter 6 of the linked report in the introduction. Discuss at least three environmental impacts caused by this devastating oil spill . 1 . Scientists concluded that this oil spill led to the largest killing of marine animals that occur from this kind of incident . 2 . Oyster farms had to be destroyed due to the contamination that resulted from the incident, and businesses felt a loss from this as well . 3 . Up to 60 years of generations for the marine diving birds in the areas will be necessary until they start regenerating a stable age average. The birds of the area also experience delay in growth still to this day .
