In May, 2020 National Geographic released a new movie,
"Surviving the
Mount Saint Helens Disaster"
in which they interviewed experts and
survivors of the Mount St. Helens 1980 eruption.
The movie is approximately
45 minutes long and can be found on DisneyPlus and Amazon Prime Video.
What I like about the film is that in addition to providing details and analysis
by volcanologists and field experts, there are also interviews with survivors
who share first hand experiences and thoughts from the events.
Given that
one of the topics this week is volcanism, this is a fitting time to explore what
is the United State's most notorious volcanic eruption to date.
If you have access to the film, please watch it and respond to the prompt
below in a 1-2 complete paragraph write up for up to 10 points extra credit.
If you do not have access to the film, please research the following questions
and respond to the prompt in a minimum one-half page write up.
Responses
must be typed in paragraph format and submitted by Friday when the
module goes offline.
If you use sources in addition to the movie, please cite
your sources.
Prompt:
How was the landscape of Mount Saint Helens and the surrounding
area changed by the events of May 18, 1980?
What were the
hazards unleashed by the eruption (the film discusses 4 in detail)?
How were the survivors in the film (or survivors in general, from
outside reading) impacted by the events of that day?
