Exercise 3, part B:
Now that you have already carefully reviewed the video presentation, consider the following
questions regarding how you might enhance or customize your own 72-hour kit and how this kit
might need to change as you move to a new location over the course of your life. Please be sure
that your responses are complete and that you take the time to fully explain/justify your
decisions and opinions. Additionally, please make sure that you avoid bullet points and any
serious grammatical mistakes. Short-answer essay questions for more in-depth consideration of
video (each is worth 10 points)
1. Carefully think about the items discussed as part of the 72-hour kit presented in this video.
Identify THREE additional items that you would recommend adding to the 72-hour kit presented
by Dr. Judkins and Dr. Bonde. Please explain why each would be a justifiable addition to the 72-
hour kit. Recall that the items would need to fit into the backpack displayed. Hint: If you get
stuck, think about some items that Dr. Judkins might need but does not currently have packed
given the family situation he describes.
As a substitute or even addition to the rain poncho, one might also need an umbrella.
Umbrellas are typically something that one is more likely to already own than a rain poncho.
Another item that is essential are any medications that are necessary to one’s survival (such
as EpiPens). A pen and paper could also be useful for a 72 hour kit in case one needs to write
down personal information or any important information that you shouldn’t forget.
2. Consider how a 72-hour kit might be different depending on the geography of where one
lives. For this question, identify FOUR specific items that would vary if you prepared a 72-hour
kit for your home In Detroit, Michigan verses your vacation home in Miami, Florida. Please be
sure to fully explain why these items would be necessary in one location and not the other, or
how they might need to be altered for each location. Hint: Consider all aspects of the geography
of each location and the types of hazards that might be experienced.
One specific item that you could have in a 72 hour kit in Detriot would be a winter coat. This
is an item that you would not particularly have if you lived in Miami. The weather in Michigan
is obviously much colder than Florida. Aside from a coat, winter gloves or a beanie is useful
for a Michigan kit because there is a risk of frostbite. Something that is more useful in a
Florida kit would most likely be water shoes of some sort. Although there are still
lakes/beaches in Michigan, it is more likely that someone might need them in an area like
Miami. Another item could be an ice shovel. Florida does not get snow and Michigan does.
