Activity 1 Finalise a township and an un-resolved problem in a community Tennant Creek: Waramanga Community Problem : Lack of consistent electricity supply to the Waramanga community living in Tennant Creek. Background : + Tennant Creek is a town located in the Northern Territory of Australia with a population of 3080 people in which 1707 people are aboriginal (as of 2021). + Tennant Creek experience sunny weather throughout majority of the days in a year. 181 days of a year is clear/ sunny sky. The town have a short but very hot wet season from December to February and a long hot dry season from March to November. Marlinja, Northern Territory. (Photo: Jarni Blakkarly) Relevance : Majority of Warumungu people doesn’t have a consistent access to electricity. Most of them uses prepaid metres which need to be topped up by power cards that is purchased through local stores or online, to get access to electricity to their houses. Majority of the community cannot afford the high electricity bill prices. Since temperatures reach up to and above 40 degrees during summer, electricity is an essential need for people to stay cool. Most of the people keep cold water in their fridge to hydrate them and to fight against the unbearable temperatures. When people cannot afford electricity, they go outside and stay underneath trees to keep their body cool. Objectives: Our team’s objective is to find a solution that can help community with their need for electricity as well as make the access to electricity
affordable. Our solution would be using solar panels with the use of batteries. Solar power is a renewable energy resource that is used widely around developed countries/ Urban cities. However, Waramanga community have very limited access to solar power due to mostly Government rules and restrictions. There are 3 houses in Tennant Creek that have solar panels build on the roof of their houses. Using solar panels can reduce the cost of electricity significant as well as help the environment by not generating greenhouse gases. The use of battery packs can store energy generated by the solar panels during the daytime and store them to be used when the sun is not present. References : 1. Blakkarly, J.
