EXERCISE 1 20 POINTS MAP PROJECTIONS ANSWER SHEET NAME: Krisha Gurung DATE: August 22, 2023 1.
From THE INTERNET name three types of map projections and their definitions? (3 pts each) A.
Azimuthal –
a circular map where the viewpoint is usually either at the top or bottom of the globe. It shows one or part of a hemisphere with a focus on the center point which makes the shapes near the center appear accurate but moving further out, they become stretched and distorted. B.
Conical –
imagine putting a cone over a part of the world. Since the cone touches the Earth at a singular point, things close to that point appear pretty accurately while they begin to stretch as we move away from that point. C.
Cylindrical –
the flat map can be rolled and wrapped around a globe. While shapes near equator seem accurate, they become more stretched as we move towards the poles. 2.
Map scales (2 pts) Examples A.
On a map with a scale of 1:24,000, a measured distance of one inch represents an actual distance of 2000 ft. (1 in = 2000 ft)
1” x 24,000 = 24,000”
24,000”/12 = 2000 ft.
B.
On a map with a scale of 1:250,000, a measured distance of 4.5 inches represents an actual distance of 17.8 miles. (63,360 inches = 1 mile) 4.5” x 250,00” = 1,125,000”
1,125,000”/ 63,360 = 17.8 miles
What is the fractional scale of a map if 10
” = 5 mi.
& each mile = 63,360 in.? 1 mi = 63,360
” then 5
mi =
316,800 inches.
So 10”
or 5 mi =
316,800 inches. So 1” =
_
31680 inches
