Please examine this satellite image of the Namib Desert. The view is looking north and so the
east is to the right. The dust plumes are tiny, and one of them is labeled. The dust obviously
originates on land. Please select the best answer for the general circulation wind system that is
responsible for transporting the dust. 111_Dust_NamibDesertJune2014.jpg
You Answered
Northeasterly Trade Winds
Polar Easterly Winds
Correct Answer
Southeasterly Trade Winds
Westerly Winds
The best answer is Southeasterly Trade Winds, because the dust is obviously moving from east
to west. Thus, Westerly Winds cannot be the answer. Also, Northeasterly Trade winds cannot
be the answer, because these are in the northern hemisphere. The Namib Desert is in the
southern hemisphere. Its not polar easterlies, because they are found over Antarctica.

The Namib Desert can be influenced by the trade winds (usually found to the north) and the
westerly winds (usually found to the south). This spot is dominated by the subtropical high
generally, but the dominant winds can insert themselves periodically.
Question 3
0.5 / 0.5 pts
Please examine this satellite image from 2003. The orientation is north is up. You are looking at
the Mediterranean Ocean. Algeria and Tunisia are in North Africa. The dust is blowing from
Algeria to the Island of Sicily. Select the best answer for the general circulation wind system
carrying the dust.
111_Dust_AlgeriaMediterranean_2003.jpg
Correct!
Westerly Winds
Southeasterly Trade Winds
Mediterranean Winds
Northeasterly Trade Winds
There is no such general circulation wind system called Mediterranean Winds. The trade winds
move from east to west, and the wind is blowing the dust from the southWEST to the
northEAST. The westerly winds do definitely impact this region
