FINAL EXAM: GEOG 2210, Maps and Mapping, Dr. Hodge
Student Legal Name: Brendan Kazay
UTC ID: BSC485
Instructions:
This exam is worth 30 points. You will submit one PDF or Word document for your Final “Exam”. If your submission file is not a PDF or Word document, you risk possibly making a 0 for your exam grade. Don’t take that risk. Please use a computer at UTC if your own personal computer is giving you trouble. Please follow the instructions for each specific problem.
The point value is noted for each problem at the end of each question. Please upload your completed PDF or Word document to the Final Exam Submission in Canvas. I will be grading these via Speedgrader. If for some reason you are unable to upload your submission in Canvas, please email your file directly to my official UTC email. Please do this by 11:59pm on April 29, 2022, as that is the deadline for your Final Exam submission. Important:
Please name your Final Exam submission file: Last Name_First Name_FINAL EXAM_GEOG 2210_Spring 2022_Dr. Hodge
For example, if I was a student, my Final Exam submission file would be named: Hodge_Joshua_FINAL EXAM_GEOG 2210_Spring 2022_Dr. Hodge
1.
Please see the “Great Hand Drawn Map” example file in Canvas, Modules or Canvas, Files, Final Exam Files. This is a map from a student and shows a great example of a map that was drawn in January 2022 (our First Hand Drawn Map). Please draw a NEW hand-drawn map and improve it based on what you have learned from the class. Be sure you include all the essential elements of a map. Your map can be the same place as your first map or of a different place. I recommend watching my Google Earth Map Creation video as you can see all the essential elements of a map. You can also review all of your old graded items in Canvas, see lecture videos, lecture PDFs and the Tyner and Krygier textbooks. Please take a high-quality photograph
or color scan of your map and insert it here. Please make sure your map is visible here below. Feel free to insert your map on the next page if you do not have enough space below. If your hand drawn map does not come out well after being pasted into your word document, you can also upload it to Canvas separately as a JPEG/JPG file. If you do this, please leave a comment to let me know. (10 points)

2. Watch my instructional video (Canvas, Modules or Kaltura) on how to make a map in Google Earth.
Also watch the Instructional Video on how to save a KMZ file as you also need to do that at the same time that you are finished making your map in Google Earth (for number 3 below). The KMZ file needs to be created/saved before you shut down Google Earth. Also, see example Google Earth maps in Canvas, Modules or Canvas, Files. There is also a PDF I uploaded with all
the example maps in the same file. You need to make a map with a similar map scale to the “Property in Kaufman County Map”. This is the BEST EXAMPLE of a good large-scale map. Please include grid lines in latitude and longitude on your map. The map can be anywhere in the world. Please make sure it is a place you are familiar with, so you know what you are looking at and how to put placemarks on various places. For example, it could be a map of a park that you like, or maybe a farm somewhere. It could be anywhere in the world. Do not make a map of only
water where the only thing on the legend would be “Ocean”. Make sure your map is of a land surface or incorporates both land and water (such as along a river, lake or beach, etc.). Your map could also incorporate snow or ice, but make sure plenty of identifiable features are present. Do not include a map of a zoomed in part of Antarctica where it is only white, and you cannot see any features at all. Please insert your map below as a JPEG/JPG. Again, like in number 1, if for some reason you cannot paste your completed map below, please upload as a JPEG/JPG in speeedgrader and notify me about that. (12 points)

4. See Pages 78 and 79 of the Krygier textbook. Comment on what these pages talk about regarding Data Privacy, Location Services, and Locational Specificity. Also: Have you experienced any privacy issues yourselves using your cell phone or the internet? If so, are there any funny, annoying, or memorable circumstances in which this has impacted you or someone Page 5 of 7

you know? Please type a paragraph for your answer. Please type at least 0.25 to 0.33 pages, single spaced, 12-point font. There are no right or wrong answers, but please adequately answer the comment prompt and the questions. (3 points)
Location services on phones can be very useful, but also very creepy and intruding at the same time. Almost everyone my age (including me) completely relies on some type of map app, whether it be google or apple maps, in order to get around. This is incredibly convenient and is something many of us take for granted. It saves us hours when taking long trips by giving us the best route using live traffic data from other people using these apps. It also saves us from buying maps and scouring out the best route possible manually. I try my best to not allow my location to
be used by any other apps besides maps and weather, but it seems that almost every app you download now wants to use your location. The only examples of apps tracking your location impacting anyone I know is if they are being tracked by families and/or friends and get caught lying about where they are. 5. Last Question! What have you learned in this course that you did not know before? How will that knowledge help you going forward in your college experience, your future career, or your life in general? Please type at least 5 to 10 sentences or more, and there is no right or wrong answer. If you have any other comments or feedback about the course, you are also welcome to share here if you want to, though it will not be part of the 2 points of this problem.

I have learned a lot from this course that I didn’t know before. I never knew how many ways maps could be portrayed and how each different projection has its pros and cons. This class also made me realize how many types of maps there are (such as general, topographic, astronomical, cadastral, etc.) and their uses. It was interesting to see how maps have evolved through time and how much better of an understanding we have of our earth now vs. in the past. Overall, I really enjoyed the class and all the topics covered. I feel much more comfortable interpreting various types of maps as well as making a map. Thank you for being a great professor!
