Write a paragraph about the “Fermi Paradox”.
The Fermi Paradox is a main discrepancy between the lack of evidence of advanced
extraterrestrial life and the high probability/likelihood of their existence. The main reason why we
believe that there should be a high probability of extraterrestrial life is due to the following
statements:
1.
Billions of stars in the Milky Way, yet alone in the galaxy with a very high probability of
planets inside the Goldilocks zone, being perfect for life
2.
Our solar system is very young, so there has to be more ancient/intelligent life that would
have evolved millions or even billions of years ago
3.
We are currently going through the main phase of space exploration, and if there were
intelligent species that evolved millions of years ago, they would have developed
interstellar travel
Access the internet to determine the latest available figure of total global power
consumption.
In 2021, the total global power consumption was around 20 TWs.
Use the Carl Sagan’s formula to calculate our technological civilization’s level on the
Kardashev’s cosmic scale.
P = 20 * 10
12
K = (log
10
P - 6)/10 = (log
10
20*10
12
- 6)/10 =
0.73.
We are still under Type I civilization.
On the Kardashev Scale, identify the power needs in Watts for Type I, II and III
civilizations.
Type I civilizations would need to be at 10
16
W power usage level in their planet
Type II civilizations would need to be at 10
26
W within their solar system
Type III civilizations would need to be at 10
36
W within their galaxy.
In how many years is our Earth expected to achieve a Type I status?
In a perfect environment, the current estimation is that we would reach a Type I civilization in
100-200 years.
