Assignment: SCI203 Groundwater Sustainability Lab
Title: The Effect of Human Development on Groundwater Sustainability Instructions: In Part I of this form, record the data from the Unit 2 Lab: Groundwater Sustainability. In Part II, follow the steps of the scientific method listed below to complete this lab report form.
When this form is complete, please submit it in the submission area of the classroom.
Part I: Using the time progression of industrialization and human development, fill in the data table. You will use this information to complete your lab report in Part II.

●
Purpose
o
In 2-3 sentences
, state the purpose of the Groundwater Sustainability Lab. o
The lab looked at how people affect the sustainability of groundwater. To determine the progression of human industrialisation and development, data from various eras was studied. Data from three time periods, including the 1800s, 1900s, and 2000s, were analyzed by the researchers.
●
Introduction
o
In a detailed paragraph
, summarize what is currently known about the impact of human development on groundwater sustainability. Use the background information provided in the Unit 2 Lab: Groundwater Sustainability. o
More than 70% of the surface of the Earth is covered by water, but only 1% of that water is considered accessible and suitable for use as freshwater for humans and other organisms. Only 99% of the accessible freshwater is found in aquifers, natural underground water chambers, or other groundwater sources. The issue is that these aquifers are being depleted by humans so quickly that hydrological cycles are unable
to replenish them. As a result, groundwater is no longer renewable for 3/4 of its volume.
●
Hypothesis/Predicted Outcome
o
In one sentence
, state what you expect the results of the lab procedure will be.
o
Future generations will struggle as the population keeps increasing and we exhaust all of our resources if we don't make big adjustments for the better ●
Methods
o
In a detailed paragraph
, summarize the steps you performed to collect the data in this
lab exercise. The goal of the methods section is to include enough information that others can duplicate your process and obtain the same results.
o
To be fair, I gathered my information by picturing the environment at the time, considering whether farming had increased, decreased, or remained the same, as well as whether groundwater levels or salt infiltration had been particularly high during those decade periods and whether there had been a lot of industrial development.
o
Results/Outcome
o
In a detailed paragraph
, summarize your data. o
Basically, the overall result is that the 1800s had the least resources for industrial development, but had more forest because of the time period, but fewer farms and fewer options for housing and other necessities, while the 1900s saw a decrease in the impact of the forest and groundwater, more farming, more housing options, industrial development, and the growth of more cities, while the 2000s saw a decrease in the impact of the forest and groundwater.
●
Discussion/Analysis
o
In a detailed paragraph
, discuss whether you obtained the expected results and what you learned from the lab.
o
This lab provides me with data from the 1800s, 1900s, and 2000s on how farming was either increasing or decreasing, as well as information on the population as a whole, letting me know whether there were cities, housing developments, or industrial development during those times, and letting me know the impact on the environment, such as the forest,
water, and ocean. I didn't expect the results, particularly in the 2000s because we had more
cities and housing developments.
