Heather Crittenden Class Technology Tool Assignment 6 th Grade Social Studies – Geography, Latin America 1. Choose a technology that you can integrate into a lesson plan for your content area KAHOOT! Is a game-based learning platform that makes it easy to create, play, and share learning games or trivia questions. This tool is amazing for studying/creating state standard questions in a fun, competitive and memorable way. Access the general home page here: Kahoot! for schools | Make learning awesome at school 2. Reference at least one higher order learning objective Each student will identify the impact cultural diffusion had in Latin America. (A) (Supporting TEK) Identify and describe the historical influence of individuals or groups on various contemporary societies. 3. How will using this this technology enhance the student learning of your chosen objective? Kahoot! Will enhance the student learning by being provided with state standard test questions pertaining to the lesson. This form of technology can be edited and formed to fit specific standards and can be monitored by the teacher. This is a fun way to learn, and it keeps competition alive. I will create questions based off Latin America and their culture. The questions will align with state standard 6.15(D) (B) and 6.2(A)(B). Students will use this website to describe factors that influenced cultural change such
Heather Crittenden as communication, transportation, and economic development. Kahoot! Test questions will also help the students identify the impact cultural diffusion had in Latin America. Lastly, these test questions will help the students describe the social, political, economic, and cultural contributions of individuals and groups from various societies, past and present. 4. What are the risks or drawbacks to using this technology? How will you minimize these issues? Some drawbacks of using this technology are minimal participation. If students are playing as a whole class or in groups, some might not feel so pressured to participate. This will lead to minimal participation, not everyone engaged in the learning, and lead to guessing on the game. Another risk is not prepared. Because this is technology, some kids come to school some days and forget their Chromebooks, forget to charge their Chromebooks, or forget their chargers. This leads to students needing to pair up and that ties in with my first risk of minimal participation. Lastly, the last risk for using this technology is assessing everyone. Kahoot! Is a game like learning tool, and like most games, you get ranked. If you are at the bottom, I cannot monitor you and tell you to focus because this device only shows me the top 5. Some ways I can minimize these issues include printing out results, incentives, round robin selection, and how I form groups. If I print out the results in a testing round, I able to see who is not participating and I can make the adjustment then so the students can engage quicker in the lesson. Incentives are a great way to get 6 th graders involved because they will do anything for a prize. If I say the top 10 after I print results receive a candy, more students will engage and really focus instead of guessing. Round Robin is a way to put students in groups and number them off. For the first question #1 will go and for the second question #2 will go and so on and so forth. This will maximize the participation making sure each student knows they must be engaged because their turn is coming. Lastly, I would be the one to assign the groups. I would not put all of my high leveled students alone and my low students in another group. I would put my low-level students with my medium-level students in a group and I would pair some medium-level students with my higher-level students. This will keep my students from feeling discouraged as well as them being able to receive help.
