Lesson Title: Discovering Weather Instruments
Author:
Michelle A. Towles
VITAL INFORMATION
Subject(s) Science and Math
Topic Weather Instruments and Graphing
Grade/Level 5
th
Standards Science: ES.12 The student will investigate and understand that energy transfer between the sun and Earth
and its atmosphere drives weather and climate on Earth. Key concepts include:
a)
observation and collection of weather data; Make connections to the weather in a certain place and time along with comparing changes daily and seasonal in weather conditions (for example: wind speed, direction, temperature and participation). b)
Predict weather changes; predict upcoming events of weather from the data collected through observation and measurements.
(Earth Science Standards of Learning for Virginia, n.d.)
Math: 5.18 The student will identify, describe, create, express, and extend number patterns found in objects, pictures, numbers and tables. (Mathematics Standards of Learning for Virginia Public Schools, n.d.)
Objectives
The students will discover the different types of weather instruments and be able to describe the weather instruments, how they were invented and their purpose with 100% accuracy once the lesson has been completed.
The students will learn the following vocabulary words, and be able to define each weather instrument with 100% accuracy once the lesson has been completed: Weather instruments
1)
Anemometer
2)
Barometer
3)
Thermometer
4)
Hygrometer
Other Vocabulary that will be gone over but will be counted as extra credit on the test. Students need to know what these words mean to understand the intended use of the above instruments.
1)
Air Pressure
2)
Wind Speed
3)
Humidity
INTEGRATED LESSON PLAN
3
The students will be able to identify and explain how various weather instruments work with 100% accuracy.
The students will record data from weather instruments and determine what type of table or graph would be best to represent the data collected.
The students will be able to create a table or graph to show the data collected from weather instruments. Students will be able to label the correct instruments that were used along with the correct data that was collected onto the graph with 100% accuracy. During this unit, the students will have fun learning about new things. They will learn about the instruments and tools used to understand weather. They will also learn how the weather changes and what causes it. The students will observe and collect information using weather tools and learn how to predict upcoming weather. The students will eventually work in groups and do activities showing their knowledge.
IMPLEMENTATION
Phase 1: Engage the Learner The students will be placed into small groups and presented with a box. Each group will have their own box. Inside the box there will be different weather instruments; however, the students will not be able to see them. The box will be a “Mystery Box”. The students will be able to put their hands in the box without peeking and feel around to see what may be inside. You could ask students: “What do you think the things inside the box have to do with weather?”
Phase 2: Explore the Concept The students will get to open the box now and see what is inside. They will get to explore the different instruments and speak with each other in their group to see what everything thinks the different instruments are.
Phase 3: Explain the Concept & Define the Terms I will show the students each weather instrument from the mystery box and explain what each is along with what they do. I will then place the students in groups where they will talk with each other. The students will then go group by group and share their knowledge of what they learned with the whole class. When each group goes, I will be keeping tally on the correct answers, then once all groups are done as a class the teacher and students will go over the instruments once again along with the following key terms:
1)
Barometer – weather instrument used to measure air pressure.
2)
Anemometer – weather instrument used to measure wind speed.
3)
Hygrometer – weather instrument used to measure humidity.
4)
Thermometer – weather instrument used to measure temperature.
5)
Air Pressure – a measure of the weight of the air molecules pressing down on earth. Measured in pounds per square inch.
6)
Wind Speed – a measure of how fast wind is traveling. Measured in miles per hour.
7)
Humidity – a measure of the amount of water vapor is in the air. Measured by percentage.

Phase 4: Elaborate on the Concept The teacher will show a short video called “Measuring Weather” by: Patrick Haney (Haney, 2020)
. This will show the students the different tools and what they do. Once the video is done, as a class, I will hold up each instrument, and pick a student from the class to tell me what it is and what it is used for. As a class, everyone will then go outside and use the instruments to collect data each day for a week (5-day school week). At the end of the week, the class will take the data and work together to input into a graph. This will be a fun concept to use teamwork and learn to use technology as the data will be put into a computer and show onto a whiteboard. Once the graph is completed, a copy will be printed out for each student to keep showing their work as a class. Phase 5: Formative Assessment At the end of class, the students will get a worksheet to check their understanding. It will be a matching worksheet where the students will match the name of each instrument with its description. Once all students are done, the students and teacher will go over the answers as a class. Time Allotment 60 minutes
MATERIALS AND RESOURCES
Technology Integration
The teachers and students will use a computer, the students will take turns, under the teachers’ supervision, inputting data into the computer to graph. This will show up on the white board for the class to see. Each day different students will input the data from each instrument so that everyone has a turn to do it. Differentiated Instruction The teacher will have flashcards to also help the students if needed for studying purposes. These will benefit any student that may be struggling or have difficulty remembering all the information. This is great for any student with any learning disability or difficulty. The students will also have an opportunity to work with the teacher one on one after class if needed for further
review or help. Mystery Box Barometer Anemometer
