Rewatch this simulation of the 26 December 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Tsunami Forecast Model Animation: Sumatra 2004
Tsunami Forecast Model Animation: Sumatra 2004
What countries have the highest simulated tsunami wave amplitude? What are the
amplitudes according to the color scale on the left? You may want to open Google Maps
for reference in another window.
The countries that have the highest simulated amplitude in no particular order are Indonesia, Thailand,
Malaysia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, and India. The amplitudes that are sorted by color determine if there
was a tsunami the places that are red have a high chance of a to the maximum height or size of the
waves within the tsunami that will hit them if one occurred. all of them are stored by color going from red
meaning dangerous, yellow semi dangerous which is still bad, green which is more doable, and blue
being calm. that's How I interpreted it.
You may want to open Google Maps
for reference in another window. You may also
want to change the playback speed under Youtube settings (gear at bottom right of
screen) to make these estimates.

I had to replay the video several times to estimate that the wave reached Aceh in less than 5 minutes! The waves seemed to have arrived at the Thai coast in about half an hour and at the east coast of Sri
Lanka in just over 1.5 hours. The waves wrapped around the back side of Sri Lanka (western side
toward mainland India) by about 2 hours and 45 minutes after the earthquake. They reached and ran
over the Maldives by approximately 3.5 hours after the earthquake. The waves arrived in Somalia at 7
hours, and in Kenya by roughly 8.5 hours after the earthquake.

At the left, check the 'Tsunami Observations' box and below that, under "Selected
Significant Tsunami Events," choose "2004/12/26 Sumatra, Indonesia." Now zoom to the locations in the previous question. Remember to zoom with the slider at
the top left of the map.
The bars along the coasts represent measurements or observations of the 2004 tsunami
heights. The bars are scaled according to the measured heights and the colors represent
the types of measurements; yellow are eyewitness accounts or surveys after the fact;
cyan are gauge measurements.
Explore the measurements by clicking on the bottom of the bars. What are the maximum
values you found for each of the locations above? Keep in mind that the measurements
are in meters; one meter is approximately 3 feet / 1 yard. Write what you find in the
blanks below next to the relevant locations.
Banda Aceh, Indonesia 9.4
Coastal Thailand

Sri Lanka, east coast

Sri Lanka, west coast

**Tips: I had to zoom in relatively close to each site to be able to spread out the
cluster of orange and cyan bars. I also changed the 'Basemap" image, on the top
right --> dropdown menu (Basemap)--> 'World Imagery (ESRI)' to allow me to see
the borders of each country more easily.

The average heights for waves that reached Banda Aceh, Indonesia were around 5-12 meters high, with
a m
aximum reported wave height of 20 meters
! You can compare the city of Banda Aceh wave heights
to the wave heights that hit the western coast of Sumatra, in the town of Lhonga, where the maximum
wave height was recorded up to 50 meters
! Coastal Thailand had average wave heights of 6-8 meters,
with a maximum
wave height recorded at 20 meters. The east coast of Sri Lanka received average
wave heights of 6- 8 meters with a maximum wave height measured around 12 meters. The west coast
of Sri Lanka received average wave heights of 3-4 meters with a maximum
wave height measured at 10
meters. The Maldives reported average wave heights of 1.5-2.5 meters with a maximum reported wave
height of 4.5 meters
. NOTE: The average elevation in the Maldives is 1.5 meters, this means the
maximum wave heights could have washed over and flooded almost the entire island chain! Kenya
received average wave heights of < 1 meter (~0.5 meters) with a maximum wave height reported of 3
meters.

Now watch raw video footage from each of those locations. You can scroll ahead and
backward to get a sense of what it was like in each location. As you watch these, think
about the timing and wave heights at these locations from your answers and exploration
above. Afterwards, write a couple of sentences about whether or not the raw footage met
your expectations. Were you surprised by anything you saw? Which location had the
most unexpected characteristics in terms of timing, height, raw footage?

As watching these deepest sorrows for the unfortunate souls who lost their lives to these events that
occurred especially Banda ach, deep sadness fueled me because that is such an unpleasant way to go.
Out of all of them, the death count of Banda ach is sad but the Kenya video worries me because of the
lack of safety gear and some random lady wearing what looks like a bathing suit and that's it. All of these
videos quite honestly made me really sad because I am sure someone has died in one of these events
that has happened.
This is an excellent 7-minute video! Please watch it! It contains important information
about tsunami hazards mitigation. After you watch the video, please write a few
sentences explaining why the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami was so deadly. Consider also
starting a discussion about the topic on the Q&A Board.

Why the Indian Ocean Tsunami Was So Deadly
Why the Indian Ocean Tsunami Was So Deadly
Umm just hearing the word tsunami is terrifying and knowing they can be 98 ft long is something that I
know I would have to accept my death and the fact that it went to many other countries is crazy. What is
crazy is I believe that from now on there should be sensors everywhere in the ocean because if the
technology exists place them everywhere so that many people should not be able to die I understand
that can be difficult but this is just wild to think about. I am more afraid of tsunamis more than ever now.
