LIBS 1155 – Foundations of World Geography Student’s Name: Instructor: Dr. Sergei Basik ID Number: Practical Lab 1: Answer Sheet Practical Lab 1: Cartography in Regional Analysis Objectives: Identify locations on Earth using latitude and longitude Calculate lengths of a degree of longitude at different latitudes Use general cartographic information to analyze the region through geographical nomenclature The lab consists of two parts Part 1. The Geographic Grid and Distance (20 marks maximum ) Answer the questions or calculate the distance. 1. Parallel and meridian: which runs North-South? (Circle correct answer.) 2. Parallel and meridian: which runs East-West? (Circle correct answer.) 3. Latitude and longitude: which indicates location North-South? (Circle correct answer.) Lattitude 4. The highest degree possible for a line of latitude is: ___ 90°N or S. ___ 5. The highest degree possible for a line of longitude is: __ 180°W or E .____ 6. What is the latitude of the equator” _ ___ 7. What is the longitude of each of the following? The prime meridian passes through the observatory in Greenwich, England. The international date line is due in 1884, as technically the meridian is arbitrary and could be anywhere in the world. (2 marks) 8. How does the length of longitudes change as latitude is increased? When the length of latitudes increases, the length of longitudes decreases. _____ ______________________________________________________ ______ ______________________________________________________ ______ ___________________________________________________ 9. Calculate the distance of the Earth along the equator. Show your work. The distance of the Earth along the equator can be calculated using the formula: 1 RIDHI 8952465
LIBS 1155 – Foundations of World Geography Student’s Name: Instructor: Dr. Sergei Basik ID Number: Practical Lab 1: Answer Sheet Distance=circumference of the Earth at the equator. Given that the length of a degree of longitude at the equator is 69.4 miles, the distance can also be calculated using the formula: Distance= 360×length of a degree of longitude at the equator. Distance=360×69.4 Distance=24984 miles which is approximately (40,207.85) kilometres. Therefore, the distance of the Earth along the equator is approximately 24,984 miles. 10.Calculate the distance of the Earth along 60°S. Show your work. To calculate the distance of the Earth along a specific line of latitude, we can use the following formula: Distance= latitude of 60°S=34.7 miles*360 Using the formula, the distance of the Earth along 60°S can be calculated as: Distance= 34.7*360 =12,492 miles. Therefore, the distance of the Earth along 60°S is approximately 12,492miles. 11.How many miles are between 30°S, 60°W and 30°S, 90°E ? Show your work. To calculate the distance between two points on Earth’s surface, we can use the Haversine formula, which takes into the account the latitude and longitude of the two points. In this case, we want to find the distance between two points both located at 30°S latitude. 1.) The number of degrees of longitude between these two locations is 150 ° 2.) The length of one degree of longitude at 30 °S latitude, which is given in the table 1 = length of one degree of longitude at 30 °S latitude = 60.1 miles. 3.) Multiply the difference of one degree of longitude at 30 °S latitude to find the distance: 4.) Distance= 150 ° *60.1=9015 miles 5.) So, the distance between 30°S, 60°W and 30°S, 90°E is 9015 miles. 12.Write the following latitude and longitudes in DMS and use the correct abbreviations. (2 marks) 2
LIBS 1155 – Foundations of World Geography Student’s Name: Instructor: Dr. Sergei Basik ID Number: Practical Lab 1: Answer Sheet (Hint: 15 degrees, 32 minutes, and 11 seconds S would be written as 15° 32’ 11” S. Because it has the S designation, it is a latitude.) 12.1. 1. 5 degrees, 20 minutes, 30 seconds N: 5° 20′ 30" N 12.2. Is this a latitude or longitude? This is a latitude. 13. Correct the errors on the following latitudes and longitudes. (3 marks) (Hint: just like with time, minutes and seconds cannot exceed 60. For example, if there are 65’ shown, you should turn 60’ into 1° and keep 5’ remaining. So, 20° 65’ 00” N would be corrected as 21° 5’ 00” N.) 13.1 89° 47’ 65” N 89° 48' 05" N 13.2 62° 59’ 61” S 63° 00' 01" S 13.3 118° 67’ 51” E 119° 00' 51" E 14.Convert the following latitudes and longitudes from DMS to decimal degrees. (3 marks) 14.1 20° 58’ 33” N Decimal Degrees: 20+58/60 + 33/3600=20.9758 The latitude in decimal degrees is 20.9758° N 14.2 04° 22’ 52” S Decimal Degree: -4+22/60 + 52/3600 = -4.3811 The latitude in decimal degrees is -4.3811°S 3

Spatial Analysis of Middle and South America Through Geographical Nomenclature (20 marks maximum ) Nomenclature segment covers the regional nomenclature: countries and territories There are 20 (twenty) geographical objects pinpointed (numbered) on the outline map (Page 4). The student should write down the name of each object - a country, a territory, or a city (Answer Sheet on Page 5). Please note that you should use the correct spelling form. Continue on Next Page 4
