This map is where I currently live. The population is very small, but so are the
hazards that occur thankfully. In town one of the biggest issues we have and
have had for quite some time is flooding and road damage in the area of
Winding Brook Road within the town of Newbury. Almost yearly there are road
washouts in multiple places and residential basement flooding in this area. This
has caused damage to some homes in the past and the biggest fear are all the
homes that are not accessible in case of an emergency event. It would be near
impossible to get fire, rescue or police to these homes during one of the road
failures in a timely manner. The Highway Department is good about responding
and getting the road fixed as fast as possible, however something more has to be
done to prevent this from happening so often. As we learned in class so far, one
huge factor here is budget restraints within the town.
I identified this area on the map and circled an area that I feel is partially to
blame. This area is steep terrain and was heavily wooded. However over the
past years a large amount of logging has been done and there seems to be more
run off than ever before from the hillsides and small stream in the area. I also
identified on the map where police, fire, ems, highway department, town
government, and the closest hospital are located. Also listed as a potential
problem area is an assisted living establishment that needs checking on during
or after any significant storm that knocks the power out, or any significant snow
fall that we see quite a bit of in town.
I have never used this type of mapping before, but found it very useful. I am not
a computer genius at all so I struggle some when it comes to technology, but
enjoy the challenge.
