Technology Portfolio: Technology in the Classroom
Hardware Devices
Interactive Whiteboard.
General Functions and Purposes.
Interactive whiteboards are large-sensitive displays
that connect to a computer. They allow teachers to project digital content, write, and interact with
educational software.
Objectives/Goals Met.
Interactive whiteboards can support objectives related to the
NCSS learning themes, such as “People, Places, and Environments.” For instance, a geography
lesson can involve interactive map exploration, where students can locate and discuss various
countries.
Risk Analysis.
When it comes to interactive whiteboards in the classroom there can be
good and bad. With an interactive whiteboard, it can be used for engaging visual content,
interactive lessons, and dynamic presentations. A potential risk that could have ones stray away
from an interactive whiteboard would be the high cost of installation and potential technical
glitches that can disrupt the class.
Tablets.
General Functions.
Tablets are portable touch-screen devices with various educational
apps and internet access suitable for individual or group use. Tablets can be used individually or
in group settings and are particularly suitable for interactive and multimedia learning
experiences.
Objectives/Goals Met.
Tablets can be used for research activities related to historical
figures, events, or cultures, aligning with objectives of the NCSS learning themes. The students

can access a wealth of online resources, eBooks, and educational apps to explore social studies
content. This aligns with “Time, Continuity, and Change,” “People, Places, and Environments,”
and “Culture” themes in the NCSS C3 Framework.
Risk Analysis.
Tablets offer mobility, access to a vast range of educational content, and
interactive learning. Concerns include potential distractions, security, and the need for
appropriate content filtering.
Business/Productivity Software
Microsoft PowerPoint.
General Functions.
Microsoft PowerPoint (
Microsoft PowerPoint Slide Presentation
Software | Microsoft 365
) is widely used presentation software that gives users the ability to
create visually appealing and interactive slideshows. These slideshows can include a variety of
elements such as text, images, charts, diagrams, and multimedia content, making it a versatile
tool for creating engaging presentations.
Objectives/ Goals Met.
Teachers can use PowerPoint to create interactive presentations
on various social studies topics. A teacher can design a slideshow about a historical event,
emphasizing cause-and-effect relationships as per the NCSS C3 Framework.
Risk Analysis.
This software is overall very user-friendly and overall easy to use and
learn. Even though the software is overall user-friendly it can lead to passive learning if not used
interactively. Another downfall to this program is the reliance on technology can introduce
potential risks, including technical difficulties or compatibility issues.

Virtual Field Trips.
General Functions.
Virtual field trips use 360-degree photos, videos, and augmented
reality to take students on virtual tours of historical sites and museums. These experiences aim to
replicate the feeling of physically being present in these locations through the use of technology.
Objectives/Goals Met.
Students can virtually visit historical landmarks, enhancing their
understanding of the past, or explore different cultures and traditions. The students would have
the opportunity to have first-hand encounters with history. These encounters enhance their
understanding of the past and complements objectives aligned with the “Time, Continuity, and
Change” theme in the NCSS C3 Framework.
Risk Analysis.
Virtual field trips can be a great resource for teachers. Virtual field trips
give immersive experiences. With the benefits of virtual field trips there can also be some
downfalls of a virtual field trip could be the need for VR equipment and potential motion
sickness.
Multimedia Software

multimedia elements like images, videos, and text. Prezi offers a canvas-based approach,
enabling educators and students to design presentations that tell a story and engage the audience
through unique transitions and visual effects.
Objectives/Goals Met.
Prezi can help meet various social studies objectives and goals in
an elementary school setting, aligning with the National Curriculum Standards for Social Studies
and the C3 Framework. Students can create Prezi presentations that analyze a significant
historical event, such as the American Revolution.
Risk Analysis.
Prezi encourages creative storytelling and fosters visual relationships
between ideas. Prezi promotes collaborative work and easy presentation sharing, while
supporting interactive elements like videos and links. There are potential challenges, including a
learning curve for educators and students, which may require training and adaptation.
The
dynamic nature of Prezi can be distracting if not used thoughtfully, potentially deviating from the
main learning objectives. Technical issues stemming from its reliance on internet connectivity
and potential accessibility barriers for students with disabilities due to the lack of accessible
design in presentations should be carefully considered.

students to narrate historical events or re-create scenes related to social studies topics in a
creative and visual way.
Risk Analysis.
Storyboard That includes an enhancement of visual storytelling skills,
offering creative platform for students to express historical events and social studies concepts.
The engaging comic strip format not only captures students’ interest but also makes history and
social studies more accessible and exciting. However, potential challenges encompass internet
access. Students may also require time and guidance to develop proficiency with the platform,
and the time-consuming nature of creating detailed storyboards could limit the number of
projects completed.
Games/Entertainment
Kahoot!
General Functions.
Kahoot! (
Kahoot! | Learning games | Make learning awesome!
) Is a
game-based learning platform that allows teachers to create and play interactive quizzes and
trivia games. Teachers can create custom quizzes or use existing ones from the Kahoot! Library.
Students can participate in these quizzes using their smartphones, tablets, or computers, and the
games are played in a competitive and engaging format. Kahoot! Offers features such as a timer,
point system, and leaderboards to make learnings more interactive and fun.
Objectives/Goals Met.

students, it effectively aligns with the “Individual Development and Identity” theme of the NCSS
C3 framework. Its adaptability extends to formative assessment, where teachers can gauge
students’ grasp of social studies concepts and track their progress.

Risk Analysis.
While Kahoot! offers an engaging and learning opportunity there are
downfalls. Overemphasizing competition within the classroom may not be suitable for all
students or objectives. Even technical challenges can arise when using Kahoot!, as it relies on
student access to devices and internet.
Minecraft: Education Edition.
General Functions.
(
Get Minecraft for Your Classroom | Minecraft Education
) This
game is a classroom-friendly version of the popular sandbox game, Minecraft. It provides a
creative, immersive, and collaborative environment for students to explore and build virtual
worlds. The platform offers numerous tools, and features designed to facilitate learning, such as
classroom management tools, in-game lessons, and a library of educational content.
Objectives/Goals Met.
Teachers can use Minecraft to recreate historical settings, events,
and monuments, enabling students to immerse themselves in historical contexts. This aligns with
the “Time, Continuity, and Change” theme, as students can experience history firsthand.
Risk Analysis.
There can be several factors as to why Minecraft: Education Edition can
be a risk in the classroom; time consuming, distraction, access and cost, teacher training, and
digital divide. Having to set up and manage a Minecraft world can be very time- consuming for
teachers, it requires lots of planning. Along with it being time-consuming the game can cause a
distraction for students if not properly guided, due to its open-ended nature.
