What role do primary financial markets play in the current economy? What role do secondary markets fill? Describe the relationship between financial institutions and financial markets and suggest a method by which this relationship could run smoother. Support your rationale with at least one citation from the literature. Primary financial markets are where investment opportunities are usually first available and how they are then bought and sold (English, 2021). In the current economy the primary market is where companies provide new stocks and bonds to anyone usually it is considered an IPO or initial public offering (Beer, 2021). Primary markets give buyers an opportunity to invest capital they have available to help a company generate capital, sort of a give and take in the moment with hopeful long-term gains. A defining characteristic of a secondary market is the investors trading stocks between each other (Beers, 2021). For example, this would be the New York Stock Exchange. Trading among investors instead of a company interacting with the public. The secondary market can be divided into two components the auction market and negotiated market (Patterson, 1999). Financial institutions act as an intermediary between savers and investors who partake in financial markets. Currently, the government has a lot of regulations and guidelines for the relationship between the two (Zutter et al, 2019). Technology advances through the years has required the SEC (Security and Exchanges Commission) to change its approach in monitoring both parties (Patterson, 1999). The risk involved for all parties can make the relationship a little rocky. One way to improve the relationship is to analyze the systemic risk involved (Lin et al, 2018). By looking at the systemic risk it allows people to more accurately show stress testing for future interactions between financial institutions and financial markets (Lin et al, 2018).
