THE PROJECT EXPERIENCE
Introduction:
The team I will be talking about is my band. Playing in a band is like working with a team at work. There are a lot of responsibilities, just like in the workplace, that we have to be a cohesive team and play as a tight unit. When a band is not on the same page and playing the same notes, it
is noticeable and chaotic.” Cohesion is a measurement of relationship, togetherness, and belongingness experienced by the team members” (AIU, 2023).
What is the organization you are working with (to remind your readers)?
My team that I am going to discuss is one (1) of my favorite teams to work with… the band. There are two (2) different musical groups that I deal with, the music band and the music ministry. This discussion will be addressing the band (because we do a variety of music compared to the music ministry). What is the team cohesion need that should be addressed, and what is the intervention for that need?
When it comes to music, everyone must be on the same page in order for the music to sound good. The band must pay attention to the band leader and the musicians must also pay attention to the singer. A band must have a leader or there could be chaos. There was a time we had a drummer that would just play too loud. We would try things like turn up the mics and the other instruments, but that would end up drowning out our singers or make them “scream” instead of

THE PROJECT EXPERIENCE
sing. We finally came up with a solution and that was getting a drum shield for the drummer, not
only did it help us, but the drummer could now hear how loud they were and finally got control of the loudness.
What is the team productivity need that should be addressed, and what is the intervention for that
need?
One of our goals were to learn music that was not just from the “old school”, but to also learn songs that we could play for a younger generation as well. We did a great job for backyard cookouts and parties for people who were forty (40) and over, but we were a little outdated when
it came to proms and parties for those under thirty-five (35) and under. To help us to become a little more “hip” in our music we enlisted the help of our children. We got a list of some of the popular music from them and listened to the artists that the younger generation was listening to. Not only did it help, but it also allowed us to update our music and put a spin on some of the music we were already doing.
Who will need to participate (at any level) in the training and development initiative?
The entire band participates in the training and development initiative when it comes to new music or new members. We come across a lot of singers that would like for us to play behind them and we enjoy it. Whenever we meet a singer that would like for us to accompany with music, we always let them know what we can do, what we are willing to do and what is a deal breaker (acting like you are too good to rehearse is definitely one).

THE PROJECT EXPERIENCE
When will the initiative take place?
The initiative always takes place immediately. We ask for what music that the singer would like for us to accompany them with and then we get to work. I love the fact that each member takes the initiative to go over the music on their own at home, that is such a plus. It shows that each musician is dedicated to their craft and what we are doing.
What is the basic schedule for rolling out your initiative?
We try to learn a new song every week while keeping the music that we already know fresh and exciting. The new music, we try out on the kids and invite them to our practices to gauge just how much work we have to do and how close we get to the sound. We love when we get venues like graduation parties and proms, then we are able to showcase all the latest songs that we have learned.
Conclusion:
Team projects can be frustrating and difficult when everyone is not on the same page. Whether in a corporate setting or a musical setting, the same rules apply to project planning and team work. The concept is to come together with a goal in mind to complete the project. There is always going to be a need for a team leader to keep order and remind the team of the goals and the deadlines.

Description
This exercise was contributed by Dr. Rick Wilson of Oklahoma State University to illustrate the modeling capabilities of Excel Solver. You are working with a large set of temporary workers (collection of interns, retirees, etc.) to create a draft plan to staff a nighttime call center (for the near future). You also have a handful of full-time workers who are your “anchors”—but you have already placed them in the schedule and this has led to your staffing requirements. They (full-time workers) are of no concern to you in the model. These staffing requirements are by day: You need 15, 20, 19, 22, 7, 32, and 35 staff for M, T, W, Th, F, Sat, Sun (respectively). You have between 8 and 10 of the pool who cannot work on the weekend (Saturday or Sunday). For these “Weekday Only” folks, there are 3 shifts possible: They will work 4 of the 5 weekdays, one shift will have…

Diversity Dilemmas
Imagine that you are working in the HR department of your company. You come across the following scenarios in which your input has been sought.
1. Aimee is the mother of a newborn. She is very dedicated to her work but she used to stay for longer hours at work before she had her baby. Now she tries to schedule her work so that she leaves around 5:00 p.m. Her immediate manager feels that Aimee is no longer dedicated or committed to her work and is considering passing her over for a promotion.
2. Jack is a married male, while John is single. Your company has an assignment in a branch in Mexico that would last a couple of years. Management feels that John would be better for this assignment because he is single and is free to move.
3. Brett, a sales employee has painful migraines intermittently during the work day. He would like to take short naps during the day as a preventative measure and he also needs a place where he can nap when a migraine occurs. His…

Chapter 9 discusses the many functions of Human Resource Management. As future leaders, it is important to understand these different functions and the manner in which they support the daily functions of all managers in the organization. Some of the HR functions will be done solely by HR (for example benefits and compensation) while other functions of HR may be joint efforts with managers in the company (for example performance appraisals are typically done by your supervisor or manager, but your supervisor or manager probably has been trained through HR on how to execute an effective performance appraisal and provided with a template to use).
Take some of the HR functions and discuss whether you think that function would be done solely by HR or in conjunction with managers throughout the organization. Give examples to support your thoughts.

Employee Involvement
Quickie Designs Inc. uses teams in the manufacture of lightweight wheelchairs. Two features of its team approach are team hiring and peer reviews. Under team hiring, the team recruits, interviews, and hires new team members from within the organization. Using peer reviews, the team evaluates each member of the team with regard to quality, knowledge, teamwork, goal performance, attendance, and safety. These reviews provide feedback to the team member for improvement.
Using these two team approaches rather than managers to hire and evaluate employees have all the following advantages except:
a.With a team approach, the input of many individuals goes into the hiring decision and brings a variety of viewpoints.
b.Team-based hiring can produce a higher probability of having an effective team member by having a good fit.
c.The peer evaluation may be more effective than the supervisor evaluation, since the team may be more familiar with the team.
d.Team-based…

Differing Perceptions at Clarkston Industries
Susan Harrington continued to drum her fingers on her desk. She had a real problem and wasn’t sure what to do next. She had a lot of confidence in Jack Reed, but she suspected she was about the last person in the office who did. Perhaps if she ran through the entire story again in her mind she would see the solution.
Susan had been distribution manager for Clarkston Industries for almost twenty years. An early brush with the law and a short stay in prison had made her realize the importance of honesty and hard work. Henry Clarkston had given her a chance despite her record, and Susan had made the most of it. She now was one of the most respected managers in the company. Few people knew her background.
Susan had hired Jack Reed fresh out of prison six months ago. Susan understood how Jack felt when Jack tried to explain his past and asked for another chance. Susan decided to give him that chance just as…
