1 Touchstone 2.1: Evaluate a Source Sophia Learning Pathways English Composition II December 12th, 2023 Evaluate A Source The topic I have chosen is abortion. Abortion is the termination of pregnancy, a complex issue that intersects with medical, ethical, legal, and societal considerations. I seek to provide a comprehensive analysis of abortion by exploring its medical aspects, ethical dilemmas, legal frameworks, and societal implications. Drawing on sources, primarily from the World Health Organization, I aim to give a nuanced understanding of abortion, acknowledging the diversity of perspectives surrounding this critical reproductive health issue.
2 Abortion has been a wide topic of discussion, regarding the ethics behind it and the movements around it with the “ My body, My choice” protests. First, I will look at the medical aspects of abortions. By examining medical literature and research studies, this section aims to provide a factual foundation for discussions surrounding abortion. Each year, 121 million pregnancies are unintended, almost half of all pregnancies. 6 out of 10 unintended pregnancies end in abortion, with 3 out of 10 pregnancies end in an induced abortion. The health risks are dramatic in developing countries, bearing the burden of 97% of unsafe abortions. The World Health Organization(WHO) explains all of this, further stating: “Unsafe abortions account for 4.7-13.2% of maternal deaths, disproportionately affecting people in developing regions.” The article is under health topics, titled “Abortion” and written by various writers under the World Health Organization. There is no stated individual author for this article. The source uses a fact sheet attached to the article which states all the facts surrounding abortions, with their own statements sourced from others and cited. The WHO also writes that access to safe and legal abortion is a crucial component of reproductive rights. Analyzing the impact of restrictions on access, especially in marginalized communities, contributes to a broader understanding of the challenges faced by individuals seeking abortion services. In conclusion, I have deemed the source reliable and credible due to all the facts and sources presented along with the affiliation the WHO has with the government, adding further credibility to their statements. The source shows all the risks that go into safe/unsafe abortions, the risk factors that come from it, as well as the long term health effects. They present an unbiased perspective, merely presenting information from an educational standpoint.

What types of questions did you ask yourself when evaluating the credibility and usefulness of your source? First, I had to think about what topic could possibly give me enough sources and evidence to write about. That led me to the topic of abortion, where I was looking for sources that are credible. The most credible sources are from organizations that are affiliated with the US government and fact checked. The World Health Organization

4 therefore provided me with an excellent source as they had a separate page that was titled fact checks and provided sources for their statements to add credibility to the topic. 2. How do you feel this evaluation will help you as you continue to move through the research process? This evaluation will help me identify my sources more efficiently in regards to the topics of my paper. Understanding the facts, evidence, and sources are all fact checked and verified gives me further confidence when writing my papers and citing the sources for information, when I know that the information I am regurgitating is in fact, correct. Using a source that has multiple articles regarding a topic that has been verified makes for a far more informative paper.
