CLASSROOM COMMUNITIES Assignment 1: Fostering Classroom Communities Walden University Emmanuelle Pierre EDUC 8082 Dr. Yarosz
CLASSROOM COMMUNITIES Introduction Creating a positive and caring learning environment is essential for supporting the holistic development of children. In a study conducted by Littman (2017), the significance of play in the social and emotional development of preschoolers was explored. The research aimed to identify the most effective teaching methods and nurturing environments that promote learning and growth while reducing behavioral challenges. According to Zero to Three (2016), play is vital to cognitive, physical, social, and emotional development, as it facilitates communication, problem-solving, idea testing, and positive interactions with others. Summary Littman (2017) conducted a qualitative case study to examine preschool children's social and emotional development during playtime. The study included participants aged four years, five months to 5 years, and four months in Virginia. Detailed descriptions of the preschool's environment were provided, including the arrangement and color scheme of the classrooms. The research observed various teacher roles during play, whether as direct participants or observers. Littman (2017) emphasized how space supports future development in literacy, mathematics, and other areas.
CLASSROOM COMMUNITIES Analysis The research conducted by Littman (2017) employed a qualitative approach, aligning with the purpose of the study. Credible sources, such as governmental agencies and professional standard organizations, were referenced throughout the research. Background information from research articles, books, and personal communication with parents added value and validity to the study. Observations, interviews, and digital audio recordings were used to collect data, providing evidence of development and interactions during playtime. Relationship to Developmentally Appropriate Practices Littman's research strongly aligned with developmentally appropriate practices (DAPs). Play, a key component of DAPs, allows for a holistic approach to learning. According to the National Association for the Education of Young Children (2020), DAPs promote optimal development through strength-based and play-based methods that engage learners. Littman (2017) described an inviting and well-organized learning environment where growth in emotional well-being, social justice, problem-solving, and cooperation was observed. Further Research The research by Littman (2017) highlighted the significant impact of play on various areas of development. It also raised questions about the potential influence of attending play- based or academic-based preschools on SAT scores and college enrollment levels. Further
