What is the most effective Method of Development used in this chapter? Prove using specific evidence from the text.
The most effective method of development used in this chapter would be compare/contrast. In many instances the author brings up issues and provides personal issues that compare/contrast her experiences. In the middle of the essay, she brings up the issue of shadism. The author talks about India being a country that is opposed to people of darker skin colour. She compares India to Calgary by discussing her skin colour, in India she is considered fair skinned but in Calgary she is known to be dark skinned compared to her white peers. To support this idea, the author discusses “I notice that while I might be a person of colour among the diaspora back home, or in any white-majority country, here I am the white person.” (Koul, 43). She refers to “back home'' as Calgary and Toronto and “here” as India.

What connections can you make between this article and our course theme, Global Citizenship and Responsibility?
I can connect this essay back to Global Citizenship and Responsibility because the issue
of shadeism is discussed. The textbook definition of shadeism is discrimination based on
one’s skin colour, a form of prejudice in which people who share similar ethnicity traits or
perceived race are treated differently based on social implication that come from cultural meanings that are attached to skin colour. Global citizenship is about bringing awareness to issues that affect people globally and shadeism is an issue in many eastern cultures that play a role in discrimination. Koul discusses how she witnessed such discrimination on her trip to India and the affects the livelihood of those who are darker skinned when treated with disrespect.
