R UNNING H EAD : REITERATION OF AFFIRMATIVE TOPIC CHOICE How can we grow the writing skills of our students? Working with 4th grade students, specifically exceptional learning students, I have seen a wide range of writing skills from students who can barely write their name entering 4th grade to students who can write 2-3 pages on any given topic. Even though students enter 4th grade on different base levels the goal is simple, each student should be a better writer leaving 4th grade then they were entering. As a 4th grade teacher I teach all subjects, therefore, I have the opportunity to adapt my schedule to meet the needs of my students. Given an 80 minute ELA I am required to teach English, grammar and writing. “Providing adequate time for students to practice writing is an essential element of any effective writing instruction program. Even so, recent surveys of elementary teachers have shown that students spend little time writing during the school day” (Bollinger, 2023). Therefore, I have adapted my schedule to focus on a single part of the writing process per day. For example, Monday is planning, Tuesday is writing, Wednesday is revising, Thursday is peer editing and Friday is publishing.“ Teachers can encourage students to collaborate throughout the writing process by brainstorming ideas about a topic, responding to drafts in a writing group, or helping peers edit or revise their work” ( Graham, 2024 ). When we allow students to work together we can break cultural divides and help students better understand each other. By continuing this process all year I am able to see students grow and learn at their own pace. I have learned as a teacher that repetition is key to growth. During Responsive Classroom, I’ve created a drill where I set a 10 minute timer. Then, I give students a topic and tell them to write as much as they can without stopping. I am always sure to emphasize that spelling does not count or grammar because the goal here is to build writing stamina. The students enjoy this exercise because it takes the pressure off and allows them to enjoy writing.
R UNNING H EAD : REITERATION OF AFFIRMATIVE TOPIC CHOICE Writing Development Evaluation and Reflection After completing the self-assessment, I feel confident that I can write fairly well. I know that Capella provides the resources I need to be an exceptional writer. These resources will help me to grow and develop my writing skills during the Flexpath. Finalize Affirmative Topic How can we help students from different backgrounds grow their writing skills? Through the discovery phase of this project, I will conduct research to learn more about effective strategies for helping students learn how to write. Discovery Strategy In the public school setting many students come into a classroom at different writing levels. How can we help all students grow in their writing skills during their 4th grade year? How do we make students more comfortable writing so they can have greater success academically and professionally? Particularly when students are from multicultural backgrounds and may have intellectual disabilities. One option will be to let students have a choice in what they write. Research states the importance of letting students have a choice when it comes to what they are going to write about. Educators are able to reach a more diverse group of students from different cultural and academic backgrounds when they allow students to have a say in the topic (Graham, 2024). In the discovery process, I will have to uncover how to level the playing field so all students will have an equal opportunity to write regardless of language barrier.
