ENG 190 Module Four Persuasive Essay Outline Template
Directions for Using the Outline
An outline is a tool that writers use to organize their ideas. For some writers, it works best to write out all their ideas and then organize them. For other writers, it works best to organize and then draft. The outline also provides a structured way to lay out your ideas so that you can get early feedback on your organization and argument. You will use this outline for your discussion by simply replacing the [enter text] sections with your own words, leaving the rest of the outline intact. The goal is for you to have a structured way to get started and share your ideas. For the sake of the discussion, you only need to fill in the sentence starters presented in the template below; you do not yet need to expand on your ideas. Later, when you complete your first draft, you will go beyond the sentence starters to build robust and cohesive paragraphs. If you use the outline as a starting place for your draft, remember to remove the headers and definitions before submitting your draft. Please see the exemplar for the final project to get
an idea of how both your draft and finished essay should look. 1.
Introduction
(See Chapter 36 for additional guidance on drafting an introduction.)
Hook Template:
Recently, the topic of four-day work weeks has forced us to consider some difficult questions, including whether a change like this would do more hurt or help to a society.
Context Template:
Historically, the answers to these questions were simpler because working five days out of the week was considered the norm. However, since the advent of the idea of working less days throughout the week, we have seen changes in the pros and cons of enforcing this, which have forced scholars to grapple whether employees only working four days a week would benefit not only employees, but business owners and customers as well.
a.
Thesis: The thesis presents your unique claim and lists your key points. The thesis is an answer to your research question. (
See Chapter 24 for additional guidance on drafting a thesis.)
Thesis Template:
Four-day work weeks prove not to be beneficial in multiple ways. Four-day work weeks pose a high risk of business owners experiencing a decrease, or major decline in revenue by losing clientele. Four-day work weeks have a negative effect
on customers by limiting their availability to products and/or services to only four days out of the week instead of five. Employees ultimately will also be impacted in a negative way because it will come down to them either having to work longer hours each day in order to maintain the same pay or enduring a pay cut due to not working the same number of hours throughout the week.
2.
Body Paragraph One
(See Chapter 34 for additional guidance on drafting body paragraphs.)
a.
Key Point: The first sentence of each body paragraph states one of your key points, or one reason why your thesis is valid. Topic Sentence Template:
One way in which four-day work weeks will have a negative impact is by reducing workflow in businesses. Reducing workflow translates to a loss in revenue. Less working time simply means less money being made, maintaining a five-
day work week would alleviate any and all stress of businessowners losing money within
their franchise.
b.
Counterargument and Rebuttal: In the counterargument and rebuttal, you will anticipate objections to your key point and offer a rebuttal.
Counterargument and Rebuttal Template: While some may argue that working less days
of the week would increase morale within in a business industry, we also know that morale can be built in other ways than offering time off and suffering from a loss in production.

or paraphrase from your source].
d.
Explanation/Analysis/Tie-Back: The final sentence of each body paragraph ties your paragraph together and reconnects to the thesis.
Tie-Back Template: If we hope to accomplish running successful businesses in America, we must consider the work and time it’s going to take in order to make that possible.
3.
Body Paragraph Two
a.
Key Point: The first sentence of each body paragraph states one of your key points, or one reason why your thesis is valid.
Topic Sentence Template:
One way in which four-day work weeks will have a negative impact is by limiting sources for customers. Customers will suffer from four-day work weeks by no longer having as much time throughout the week to have access to whatever products, sources, or services they need.
b.
Counterargument and Rebuttal: In the counterargument and rebuttal, you will anticipate objections to your key point and offer a rebuttal.
Counterargument and Rebuttal: While some may argue that customers can simply plan to get their products and/or services within those four days, that resolution may not work for every circumstance.

d.
Explanation/Analysis/Tie-Back: The final sentence of each body paragraph ties your paragraph together and reconnects to the thesis.
Tie-Back Template:
If we hope to accomplish a strong, consistent relationship with customers, we must consider that keeping products and services available to those customers plays a major part in that.
4.
Body Paragraph Three
a.
Key Point: The first sentence of each body paragraph states one of your key points, or one reason why your thesis is valid.
Topic Sentence Template:
One way in which four-day work weeks will have a negative is
by changing either the number of hours an employee is expected to work each day or the amount of money an employee will make each pay period. To facilitate four-day work weeks employees will either have to work more hours each day or endure a pay cut from their normal wage or salary.
b.
Counterargument and Rebuttal: In the counterargument and rebuttal, you will anticipate objections to your key point and offer a rebuttal.
Counterargument and Rebuttal Template: While some may argue that just having that extra day of not having to work makes it worth it, it’s apparent that ultimately you will either still work the same number of hours and have to experience even longer workdays or you will have that extra day off but you won’t make as much money.

understand that working less is not what’s going to make that happen for us.
5.
Conclusion (See Chapter 36 for additional guidance on drafting a conclusion. See also Chapter 3 for additional guidance on audience.)
a.
In conclusion, four-day work weeks is not the answer to any of society’s problems, no one’s ultimate goals will see the light of day thanks to one less day of work. If your goal is to work less, then removing yourself from your place of work should be considered. A four-day work week may initially sound great and relaxing but when you truly break it down it actually has negative effects on everyone to include businessowners, customers,
and employees. According to the research I have conducted, four-day work weeks are actually not beneficial.
