Emily Grierson’s Oedipus Complex: Motif, Motive, And Meaning in Faulkner’s ‘A Rose For Emily’
From reading this article by journalist Jack Scherting “Emily Grierson Oedipus Complex: Motif, Motive, And Meaning in Faulkner’s “A Rose For Emily” demonstrates that the meaning is likely associated with Emily’s motive. One way Faulkner did this is by utilizing an unknown narrator. Another way Faulkner made it difficult to interpret the motive is by using the first-person plural. Lastly, Faulkner scrambles the chronology of the story to make it difficult to interpret the motive.
The article goes on to explain that there are in-text clues that help to figure out Emily Grierson’s motive. “Because Faulkner stressed the significance of the father/daughter relationship, his comments should be given careful consideration” (Scherting, p 399). Emily’s father did everything possible to intervene in Emily’s relationship, which made her more dependent upon her father. The article also provides information for out-of-text help. “For assistance in untangling the chronology, readers can check Paul D. McGlynn’s careful study” (Scherting, p 398). In my opinion, the article provides valid information on how to find Emily’s motive. The information in the article allows the reader to think outside of the box. It also provides more clarification
on points that may have been difficult for the reader to understand. For example, the relationship between Emily and her father has a much deeper meaning than can be comprehended from the story. The article goes further in-depth on the meaning of the relationship, which also helps to form a motive.

I think that the out-of-text clues provide extra information to form a rational opinion for the motive. I never thought of the Oedipal complex. The Oedipal complex is powerful evidence that provides
the story with Emily’s motive. External evidence also allows the reader to be able to place the story in chronological order. This order allows the reader to form a timeline, which will help the reader to form their own opinion.
