b) Three Potential Topics
Research - Aviation concerns
Interview - Airlines and pilots with experience that could answer any questions provided by
students
Education - Explain to the upcoming generation about transportation engineering in aviation
c)
Problem Statement
Research -
Conduct a research project consisting of information about aerodynamics, congestion,
and safety. Technical questions would be involved within this literature review to identify
potential safety concerns, challenges, and opportunities that can be provided by aviation. The
research would be conducted from multiple literature sources that provide analytics and insights
on the issues within aviation and how transportation engineers can have an impact. Students can
also address the safety concerns and high-demand for traveling through aviation. Another issue
that can be addressed is the impact aviation will have in the future with further developments and
research and address the scope of the issue.
Interview -
Interview a transportation engineer that specializes in aviation to ask questions relating to
airports. We would ask technical questions that focus on describing a complex aviation project
they have worked on in the past and their role that took place during it. The point of this
interview is to understand what it takes to be a transportation engineer in aviation by telling us
what qualities are needed for this role as well as the demands the market has for engineers.
Aviation in engineering, although fall into transportation, is unlike transportation engineers that
work on highways or local/residential areas. We must cater our education and time commitments
to a goal we understand and work towards.
Education -
Influence and describe how aviation education affects people in their daily lives to the
upcoming generation, specifically middle school students. Keep the engineering principles
interesting and exciting to learn from an engineering standpoint by using experiences and
projects we commonly created in the past. Make engineering interesting to children by
explaining potential projects they will work on in the field of transportation engineering and the
benefits that come by joining the scene.
d) Critical Questions
-
What is the main role provided by TCAS (Traffic Collision Avoidance System) in
preventing mid air collisions?
-
What is the significance of the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) in the United
States aviation industry?
-
What are the operations of a jet engine, including the key components and function?
-
What methods are used to evaluate the performance of aviation systems and engineering
principles?
-
How do aircrafts’ autonomous systems work?
-
What are the primary functions of the hydraulic systems within aircrafts?
-
What is expected out of transportation engineers that work in the aviation industry?
-
Is there a major difference in GPS and inertial navigation systems?
-
How accurate is the information gathered from airlines and what is the most efficient way
to obtain this information?
-
How do transportation engineers account for the extreme weather conditions that take
place in specific areas around the world?

Our Potential Contribution

Our potential contribution for our research project is to translate the research we gathered
and spread it to potential engineers from students in elementary to college students choosing
majors. We would talk about how engineers come up with ways to implement aerodynamics,
congestion, and safety into their work and what is expected of them for aviation engineering. The
research we provide would sound interesting, new, and most importantly doable. Engineering has
a reputation of being one of the toughest majors and principles we need to strive towards and
implement into our work. By contributing to the growing transportation of engineers, we will be
able to contribute to our dream of becoming engineers ourselves.
Interview -
Hearing from an engineer in transportation is a contribution to us as students, as it will
provide insight into how the workplace runs and what qualities specific transportation agencies
or firms are looking for from us as students. This will also contribute to the students that are
looking for jobs in aviation or internships as they will know what they are looking for in the vast
amount of resumes. They would know the depth that transportation engineers go to for projects.
That would motivate the students that are oriented to work in the field. This would also be
supported by the fact that our professor worked in the field as well, for we can only provide
information that the professor has had for multiple years.
Education -
By providing interesting and exciting information on aviation to the upcoming
generation, we would contribute to possible engineers in the future. The work we put in is what
will either stick to students that may be the reason why they have found a passion in math and
sciences early on in their education. We would explain the projects that aviation engineers would
work on and make it sound as if they could do it too without setting too high of expectations for
them. Education is one of the most influential contributions we could give to anyone wanted to
learn or strengthen their knowledge on engineering principles.
