This week, we are asked to discuss three ways that the Christian faith motivates one toward excellence in writing. Christian faith motivates me to avoid plagiarism in writing by using the same discernment given by God that I use in everyday situations. We need to be able to consume materials and create our own opinions; this forces us to dig deeper into our thoughts. If we decide we like someone else’s work or it heavily influences our own, it is imperative to cite our sources. Plagiarism is not just stealing from the author, but it is stealing from your education. We can honor ourselves and the original author by learning to cite our work and credit the original creator. The Bible teaches us that we are created in the image of God. We can use this in writing by being just as creative as God was when creating the world: “and he has filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills—to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver, and bronze, to cut and set stones, to work in wood and to engage in all kinds of artistic crafts.” (Psalm 139:13-14) We can create the same masterpieces if we work hard enough in our writing. This week’s video, Academic Integrity, says, “Do not be afraid to work hard to get it right.” We must use our integrity to ensure we do the right thing, even if it causes more work for us. Paying attention to detail is essential in every aspect of our lives, whether driving, cooking, or studying. When we know what we are doing with our studies, we can avoid mistakes that can have severe consequences. Take a rubric, for example; highlighting the requirements and checking them off as we complete an assignment ensures the highest possible score, leading to passing grades. If we fail to acknowledge details or choose to ignore them, it is possible to fail assignments and, in the worst cases, the entire course. Using our God-gifted discernment, creativity, and attention to detail, we can honor our studies and reach excellence by avoiding plagiarism by correctly citing our work while writing. References:
