Plagiarism Quiz (10 pt) Fall 2021 Plagiarism Quiz (10 Points) 1) (6 points) Compare the sample student essay and the excerpt from his source text below and identify the issues of plagiarism in the sample student paper. a) First, explain two ways the student has plagiarized. The student has plagiarized because they did not credit the author or source of the information they provided, they also failed to paraphrase well enough. b) Second, fix these issues by rewriting parts of the text and/or using proper MLA citation on the student sample paper below. Excerpt from Source: Berinsky, Adam. Silent voices: Public opinion and political participation in America. Princeton: Princeton University Press, 2004. From page 4: “Exclusion bias--alternatively termed "compositional bias"-- is the bias that results in measures of public opinion when particular types of political interests are not represented in opinion polls. Such bias could threaten the representational relationships central to the functioning of a democracy. Representatives seeking information concerning the full spectrum of the public's preferences may, in fact, be missing the sentiments of individuals)” Student Sample Paper: One common argument made by polling experts is that polls should not be used to determine the candidates in the debate because they are having difficulty collecting accurate data in polls. One reasons for this is compositional bias. Compositional bias is the bias that causes unfair displays of public opinion when particular types of political interests are not represented in opinion polls (Berinsky 2004).
2) (2 pt) What is “patchwriting,” and what are the dangers of doing it? Patchwriting is borrowing large peices of information from a scource and re wording or parahrasing them in your own work. Even if the work is cited, the wording and information can still be considered plagarism because of how similar it is. Teachers undertand that it can be difficult when trying to paraphrase complex information but expect the student to do their best. 2) (2 pt) Why is plagiarism considered such a huge infraction? What are the penalties for committing plagiarism in CMN 111/112? Plagarism is considered such a huge infaction because it is essentailly stealing others information. It can be considered fraud and people work hard for their research and writing so they should be given credit. The penalty for plagarism will be a grade of zero for the plagarized assignment, a letter to the dean, and non plagarized revison of the assignemnt and receieve at least a C grade. The most penalty a student can get for plagarism is failling the entire course.
