UJM1 Task 3
Hip-Hop and Jay-Z
Nancy Huerta
A. Analysis of Chosen Genre
A1. Genre Development Hip-Hop started in the Bronx in the early 1970s, with its cool beats and rap vocals. It came together through the cultures of Black, Latino,
and Caribbean young people and became popular in the US. Hip-Hop
is not just music; it includes DJing, rapping (MCing), breakdancing (b-
boying), and graffiti. All these things have had a big impact on society
(“hiphopgoldenage.com"). A2. Genre Topics or Characteristics
Hip-hop focuses on artistic elements like Rapping (MCing), DJing, breaking, and beatboxing, which allow for creative and authentic self-
expression. Each member of a hip-hop crew typically brings their own
vocal style and sound. With its chest-thumping beats and rapid-fire lyrics, hip-hop provides a dynamic outlet for artistic expression (source: www.kennedy-center.org
).
A3. Influence of Diverse Cultures
Hip-hop grew from different cultural influences, shaping its unique style. It mixed African, West African, Caribbean, Latino, and American elements. The Bronx, with its mix of cultures, brought in call-and-response from West Africa, sound systems from Jamaica, and dances from Latino communities. Disco and funk music also added to the mix. This mix of cultures created the foundation of hip-
hop, showing how different styles came together (nmaahc.si.edu/explore/stories/collecting-hip-hop-history)
B. Analysis of Chosen Artist
B1. Genre Interpretation
Jay-Z stands out as a significant figure in today's rap and hip-hop landscape. Since 1996, he has consistently produced influential music. Particularly noteworthy is his record-breaking achievement as the rapper with the most Grammy awards, boasting a total of 23 wins.
Additionally, he has lent his production talents to notable artists such as Kanye West, Alicia Keys, Beyoncé, and Drake, contributing to their
successful albums and singles.
B2. Key Topics from the Time
One of the ways Jay-Z has addressed societal issues, even in a current context, is through his music. For example, in his song "The Story of O.J.," Jay-Z reflects on the complex dynamics of race, identity, and financial empowerment. The line "I'm not black, I'm O.J."
suggests that O.J. Simpson, despite being a prominent Black figure, has attempted to distance himself from his Black identity. Through these lyrics, Jay-Z delves into deeper societal expectations surrounding racism, wealth, and power, sparking conversations about
these important issues.
