©2021 Chamberlain University Food is a form of nutrition and sustenance to sustain life on earth. Food is much more than nutrition; it is a universal form of communication that allows us to connect. Throughout our lives most humans are looking for connection. We connect during holidays, festivals, and gatherings. The center point of all these forms of celebration involve food. As a universal language, food transcends race, religion, ethnicity, sex sexuality, age, and class. It is a continuously evolving form that not only connects humans but has the power to connect cultures, memories, loved ones, and can even create fusions. The concept of fusion is taking food groups from different cultures and combining them to form new flavors, techniques, and palettes panels making food a universal language. A primary way connection occurs through food is recognition. People from completely different cultures and regions can recognize ingredients. This can help people from completely different frameworks of life can be brought together. Kozak (2013) has found that asylum seekers found a steady pace in a new country through a program called community kitchen. The purpose of this program was to have chefs teach asylum seekers to cook. It was noted that as the asylum seekers recognized ingredients, it helped them feel more welcome as a part of the community as it brought people from different cultures together through food (pp.1). Some might think that this is untrue as the ingredients might be used differently or have different names due to language. However, this basic familiarity can make someone think I can do this, as they acclimate to a new life and culture. It can even foster fusions as they may decide to combine their cooking styles with the new styles being taught
©2021 Chamberlain University As a population we have segregating factors, however, it is vital for us to have portals such as food to connect despite these factors. Recognition, fusion, and education serve as methods to enhance food as a universal language. Continuing these methods is vital for this universal language to continue to evolve. More importantly, Food can continue to foster and put a focus on healthy connection between humans of very different identities which today s world struggles with.
