Argument Research Essay Proposal Example     Jessica Halpern Chamberlain University  ENGL148  Professor Tracy Sieglaff January 15 th 2024 ©2021 Chamberlain University
Argument Research Essay Proposal      Please complete all 3 parts of this template, using the example proposal template from the assignment instructions as your guide.      I. Based on your current favorite choice for a topic/debate within the course theme announcement, answer the following:    A. State your stance within the debate you chose, without using “I.” (1 sentence)   Food is a universal language that we all speak, regardless of our cultural or linguistic background. B. Why is your stance a good one for an argument research essay? (at least 3 sentences)   This is a good stance for an argument essay because there are two possible basic stances, that we all speak the same language when it comes to food, or we don’t. The research will explore diverse cultures and how they speak about food demonstrating in diversity there is oneness. Finally, the stance lends itself well to research because there are viewpoints existing that believe food is not universal and is very particular to culture.   C. Who might disagree with your stance and why? (at least 3 sentences)   Once I do my research, I will have key figures on who disagrees and why. Some of my ideas on some valid points for disagreement would be different parts of the world speak different languages, certain climates can sustain certain types of food. Also, people of different background prepare food differently, and eat it differently based on social norms. It will be a challenge to demonstrate throughout my paper on how food unifies us, and I hope to identify it through my research. I will need to show how eating unites us in a family/friend setting, how it helps us show affection, and it can be a form of communication. D. Who do you imagine your audience will be? (at least 2 sentences)   I imagine my audience will be anyone who eats, loves the food network, home cooks, and educated chefs. I believe that anyone could potentially be interested since food is universal.   II. In a full paragraph of 7-9 sentences, and without performing any research, please note what you already understand about the debate and what you do not already understand about the debate:     My understanding of food is a unifier among all cultures. Food not only sustains life but is a crucial point for bonding with each other. All cultures have their own traditions and ways of exploring food. However, food is used across the board to celebrate holidays, show affection, and to heal. I do not know the full extent per each region of the world; however, I look forward ©2021 Chamberlain University
to exploring this in my research. I have experience from travel and eating at restaurants. I noticed across all cultures that it is a form of connection in a world where we suffer from being disconnected. I also understand from the opposing viewpoint that there are specific traditions per culture, and specific food per tradition. For example, I am Italian, and on Christmas eve we eat the seven fishes, however, my Irish counterparts do not value the seven fishes and eat ham to bring in the holiday. Regardless, we are all coming together to connect during the holiday.   .       III. Shortly, you will begin scholarly research in the library. This research will help you find opposing viewpoints (sources that disagree with you) and supporting viewpoints (sources that agree with you), as well as information to fill in missing gaps in knowledge you may have. With all three of these goals in mind, please list five possible search phrases you might use when you begin searching in the library.   Globally food unifies us Food is a universal language Food is a form of connection What are cultural differences food represents How is food used to show affection How does food divide us   ©2021 Chamberlain University
