Introduction
After exploring Reddit’s forums, I’ve decided to base this project on the subreddit
r/chess
. This
subreddit serves as a vibrant community hub for chess enthusiasts of all skill levels to come together and
discuss various aspects of the game. As one of the most popular subreddits dedicated to chess, it boasts a
diverse range of content, including strategy discussions, game analysis, news about tournaments and
events, educational resources, and even memes related to the game.
At its core, r/chess provides a platform for players to share their experiences, seek advice, and
engage in lively debates about different openings, tactics, endgames, and chess-related topics. Whether
you're a beginner looking to learn the fundamentals or a seasoned player aiming to improve your skills,
the subreddit offers something for everyone.
Members of this community often share their games for analysis and critique, seeking feedback
from fellow players to help them understand their strengths and weaknesses. Additionally, they discuss
recent developments in the world of professional chess, analyze games played by top grandmasters, and
share insights into the latest trends and strategies in the game.
Genres
1.
Puzzle/Tactic: This genre refers to posts or discussions related to chess puzzles or tactics. Chess
puzzles often involve finding the best move or sequence of moves to achieve a specific goal, such
as checkmating the opponent or winning material. Users might share puzzles they've encountered
in games or composed themselves, and others can discuss the solutions and strategies behind
them. Tactics are fundamental to chess improvement, so this genre is likely popular on r/chess for
both learning and entertainment purposes.

Chess Question: where users seek assistance, advice, or clarification on various aspects of the
game. These questions can range from queries about specific chess positions or tactics to inquiries
about chess strategy, rules, openings, or even recommendations for learning resources. Users
often provide detailed descriptions of the situations they encounter in their games or seek
guidance on improving their skills and understanding of chess principles. The community

Chess Book Recommendation Request
Figure 1:
My thread asking for book recommendations to improve my game.
This is a thread asking for a book recommendation to improve my opening preparation.
The opening is the initial phase of a chess game where players create a position to build their
attack on the opponent. It is usually a set of predetermined moves that a player studies to have a
solid position after the opening. In this thread, I asked the community for recommendations on
chess books to learn about different types of openings. Currently, I only know the basic ones that

start with the move e4 when I’m playing white and the move e5 when I’m playing black. This
opening is taught to all beginners and players expand their chess knowledge by reading different
books/courses.
This thread falls under the ‘Chess question’ genre as I’m asking for suggestions from the
community. The question I’ve asked is a prevalent type of question in the chess community
however, with ever-changing times, new ideas, and the surge in modern chess, new and more
efficient resources keep coming up which is why I wanted to post this thread. I aimed to gain
expert advice from professionals and savants of the game to possibly improve my chess skills.

This thread talks about the upcoming Chess World Championship and the prospective
scenario that an Indian becomes the World Champion. The World Championship match will be
played between the current World Champion, Ding Liren, and the winner of the Candidates
Tournament. The Candidates is an 8-player round-robin tournament where the players are chosen
by their achievements in other professional tournaments throughout the year. Out of the eight
participants this year, 3 of them are Indians and this is why I chose to write about this topic. The
3 Indian players are ages 18, 19, and 29 and each of them has shown promising results and
development throughout the year. This thread discusses the possibility of having an
18-19-year-old Indian World Champion and prompts the community to share their thoughts on
this topic.
This thread falls under the ‘
News/Events’
genre as it talks about the upcoming World
Championship match and Candidates tournament. This topic of this thread has been discussed a
little bit in the chess world but hasn’t been introduced to this Reddit community and I felt like
this was a good topic to discuss. The possibility of having an 18 or 19-year-old World Champion
is a very niche space for the chess world. The previous champion, Magnus Carlsen, became
world champion at 23. This thread also highlights the re-emergence of Indian chess at the top
level, previously occurring in the ‘90s. To promote my thread and increase user engagement, I
have added a poll so people can voice their stand on the topic without having to type anything.
As seen in Figure 2, 163 people have already voted while only 10 people have commented
proving that you can promote engagement without needing people to click on the thread.

r/chess - Sweet tactic! White to play and win.
Figure 3:
My thread that has a puzzle involving a good tactic for white.

Figure 3 shows my thread which has a unique puzzle that I found on lichess.com (an online chess
platform). In this puzzle, black played the last move (highlighted by the green squares) and now it’s
white’s turn to play. Here white has a set of moves that involves deep thinking and precision and will lead
to a win. This thread asks the audience to try and find those sets of moves.
The genre of this thread is ‘Puzzle/Tactic’ since it has a chess puzzle involving a tactic for whites
to win the game. There are similar threads posted every day involving different puzzles and tactics but
there are 10

different positions possible in chess so there’s always a new puzzle possible every
day. This is a pretty advanced puzzle with a pretty tactic which shows the quick surge in upvotes (see
Figure 3) - 6 is the highest I’ve gotten in the first 24 hours. To post this I had to find the solution myself
and verify it with an engine (a chess bot that is similar to AI and gives the best move in the current
position). People usually interact with this kind of post by looking at the picture in the preview and trying
to solve it themselves. If they like the tactical precision a lot, they tend to upvote it. Hence, these kinds of
posts are really popular amongst the community and gain a lot of views at the least, if not upvotes.
