Sustainability Portfolio - (Weightage 15%)
A. Purpose & Learning Outcomes
During the last few weeks, we have learnt about the waves of environmentalism in the past, and that
we are living in the fourth wave of environmentalism right now. The environmental movement is
divided over the importance of small steps — are they a critical starting point or a distraction from
policy and institutional changes? A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, but will small
changes add up to the kind of massive shift needed to bring us toward sustainability? When practiced
consistently, small steps facilitate both gradual evolution and rapid revolution for positive and lasting
change. Of course, institutional and policy change is crucial, but it doesn’t happen on its own; it
happens when people are motivated by their values, and they demand change.
The challenge before us
as sustainability professionals is immense. To succeed, we must realize that while small stuff can seem
trivial, it is critical. People need to feel invested in a movement on a personal level before they can
embrace and advocate change on a societal level. The key message is- when strung together with
purpose, small steps can carry us a great distance.
Keeping the above philosophy in mind, this assignment provides you an opportunity to demonstrate
your individual actions for sustainability while contributing to the global environmental movement. To
showcase your actions toward sustainability you are required to create a Sustainability Portfolio that
will help you to -
1) Identify and demonstrate your (high and low impact) actions in the sustainability field and what you
can do.
2) Show evidence of your personal application of sustainability.
3) Highlight your employability and technical skills.
4) Transfer skills and knowledge gained in the past to present and future settings.
Optional Certification: The assignment objectives align well with the Living Planet Leader program by
WWF-Canada. You can find more information about the
WWF-Living Planet Leader (LPL)
program at
the link
Campus Actions: Living Planet Leader | WWF.CA
.
This program is a self-guided certification that will
help you in earning credit in the following four categories. If you wish you can complete this
certification alongside the program.
1.
Campus, community or global volunteerism
2.
P
ersonal application of sustainability
3.
A
pplication of sustainability in academics
and
4.
L
eadership and teamwork.
As sustainability professionals need to develop a hands-on approach for driving sustainability, this is an
opportunity
to put sustainability into practice and reflect this in your portfolio through the LPL
certification. For this assignment, your focus will be limited to the
Personal Application of
Sustainability
category. Select any 8 high impact actions and support them with evidence and a brief
reflection on the reduction of your ecological impact.

(result in less variation in your ecological footprint), while other actions will have high impact (these
can significantly reduce your ecological footprint and/or influence others to reduce their footprint as
well). For the selection of 8 relevant actions, focus on high impact actions. Each action should be
demonstrated with evidence and brief description why these actions have a high impact in reducing
your ecological footprint.
