ENGL 1301 Multimodal Literacy Narrative Self-Assessment
This tool is designed to help you uncover the strengths and weaknesses of your draft based on
the assignment criteria. You will assess your draft against 6 dimensions; 4 of those dimensions
have been created by me – Inquiry, Context, Using and Engaging with Sources, and Rhetorical
Choices and Creative Risks; two of the criteria will be created by you. Add in two dimensions
that you think you peers or I should pay attention to as we read your draft. Is there a particular
area where you felt you did a lot of work that isn’t recognized in the existing dimensions? Is
there something in particular you’d like to challenge yourself to do in your draft? Turn these into
dimensions on this self-assessment tool, write some descriptions for them (from Wow! To
Yikes!), and then rate your draft across all dimensions.
When rating yourself, you will fill (in any color) the box you feel that most accurately represents
the current state of your draft. If you think your draft lands somewhere in the middle of two
boxes, you can highlight both boxes. Once you’re done rating, complete the end of assessment
reflection questions at the end of the document. These will help you develop a sense where and
how you might continue revising.
Dimension 1: Inquiry
This dimension of your project is focused on the depth and breadth of your
inquiry. When assessing your artifact in this category, think about how it connects
to your Theory of Writing. Does your artifact target an essential or key idea you
discovered through your inquiry? Have you thought about what purpose you
would like your artifact to fulfill?
Wow!
Nice!
Hmm.
Yikes!
The purpose and
message of my
artifact reflect the
conclusions I formed
in my Theory of
Writing project and
delivers a call to
action for further
inquiry.
The purpose and
message of my
artifact reflect key
ideas and
conclusions I
formed in my
Theory of Writing
project.
The message
and purpose of
my artifact are
connected to an
idea in my
Theory of
Writing paper.
There is not a
clear connection
between my
artifact and my
Theory of
Writing paper.
Dimension 2: Context
The context dimension addresses questions about how the information that
surrounds
your question, inquiry, or topic is represented in your artifact. Do you
have a clear understanding of why your audience is interested in this inquiry? Is
your artifact developed enough to be understood by audience without your help?
Wow!
Nice!
Hmm.
Yikes!
My artifact was
designed to not only be
understood without my
help, but to point my
audience toward useful
sources of information if
they have additional
questions or would like
to take on this inquiry
themselves.
My artifact
contains all the
information my
audience needs
to understand
my purpose and
message.
My artifact was
written with a
particular
audience in mind,
but still needs
more revision to
be understood
without my help.
My artifact
cannot be
understood
without my
help.
Dimension 3: Rhetorical Choices and Risk Taking
This dimension acknowledges the creative risks your rhetorical choices have
compelled you to make in this project. How have you used the multimodal parts
of this project to support or extend your ideas? Are there parts of this project
where you’ve tried something new and risky to you?
Wow!
Nice!
Hmm.
Yikes!
I’ve made some
choices in my text
that disrupt what is
usually expected of
this kind of genre or
form. These risks
add an important
and/impactful effect
to my artifact as a
whole.
I have met all
assignment
expectations, and
the multimodal
elements support
the content of my
artifact. I have some
creative ideas or
risks I would like to
try, but I haven’t
figured out how to
enact them yet.
I met all
assignment
expectations,
but my use of
multimodal
elements is
limited.
I met most of the
expectations for
the assignment,
but I’m still not
really sure what
multimodal
means and/or
how it relates to
my project.
Dimension 4: Using and Engaging with Sources
This dimension examines the way you use sources in your text. For this project,
your understanding of your rhetorical choices and your Theory of Writing draft are
your sources of information. Have you thought about what you know about the
rhetorical context of your artifact in every choice you’ve made? Are you staying
true to what you learned in your Theory of Writing project?
Wow!
Nice!
Hmm.
Yikes!
My artifact was
created with a
stakeholder
audience in mind. I
used my
understanding of the
rhetorical context
for this assignment
to accurately
present a key idea
from my Theory of
Writing project in a
new, unexpected, or
exciting way.
My artifact was
created with a
stakeholder
audience in
mind. I chose to
present my
message in a
way that I
believe is
engaging and
relevant for this
rhetorical
context.
I included 2 -3
experiences in my
narrative. My
descriptions and
explanations are a
little developed,
but I think I can say
more about them.
The connections to
literacy, writing,
reading, and
learning are
implied, but I think
I can write about
them a little more
clearly.
I included two or
fewer
experiences in
my narrative. My
descriptions are
vague and not
very detailed. I
am not really
sure how my
experiences
connect to
literacy, writing,
reading, or
learning.
Dimension 5: Image
Tell me a little bit about the dimension you created!
Wow!
Nice!
Hmm.
Yikes!
There are rhetorical
choices, the effort
made is prominent
and the image is neat
Rhetorical choices
have been made
and the image
is well thought out
Minimal risk taking
but the effort
looks like its there
Very basic
image,
no risk taking

Wow!
Nice!
Hmm.
Yikes!
The text is well
thought
out and put
together
but there isn’t
much
of it because the
artifact can
speak for itself
The text is neat
and it doesn’t
overpower the
artifact as much
There is less text
and it is more
organized
but still
overpowering
Too much text
it takes the
attention away
from the artifact
Overall Assessment
Based on the information and your own ratings in the scales above, where would
you rate your progress on this draft?
Wow!
Nice!
Hmm.
Yikes!
I have a clear idea of
what the assignment
is asking of me, and I
have added several
personal touches
and creative
rhetorical choices to
make this
assignment my own.
I can visit the writing
center or visit a peer
to improve my draft.
I have a clear idea
of what this
assignment is
asking of me, and I
have tried making
creative rhetorical
choices in this draft
to make it my own.
I can visit the
writing center or
get feedback from a
peer to improve my
draft.
I think I should
what this
assignment is
expecting of me,
but I have really
figured out how
to make this
project my own. I
should visit my
instructor or the
writing center to
get myself on the
right track.
I feel pretty lost
or confused
about this
assignment. I
should contact
my instructor
ASAP to get
myself on the
right track.
Reflection
Now that you have an idea of the current state of development in your draft, what
will you do to improve it? Let’s think about some of the things you have noticed
about your text.
According to the dimensions, what are the strengths of your draft? Where
did you score the highest and why?
My strength is text because my artifact doesn’t have much of it since its
easy to understand and can speak for itself
According to the dimensions, what are the weakest points of your draft?
Where did you score the lowest and why?
I scored “nice” on most of them so my weakness is that I have to push
myself a little more to make the “wow”
What can you do to improve on your strengths? How can you make your
draft
stronger
?
I can work on the ones that I scored “nice” on to bring them up to a “wow”
and I can go to the writing center to get extra help.
What can you do to address the weaknesses of your draft? How can you
move the content of your draft up to the next level?
I can seek a peers help for feedback or again, go to the writing center.
Overall, how do you feel about your draft? What are some questions you
have about the assignment expectations or places to seek help that arose
after assessing your work?
Overall I feel that my draft is pretty good but I could use some feedback. I
think it can be way better but I just don’t know how to get there.
