This is to make sure others are aware so it does not appear you are acting unethically, but also to get perspective and suggestions for next steps. If your ability to act impartially is affected (such as may be the situation in this case), you should seek to be removed from any decision-making processes affected by the conflict of interest. 05/11/23, 01.03 M3-W10-V2-Dilemmas: APSC 100 2023W1 Introduction to Engineering | Conflict of interest is when you have the potential to personally receive an additional benefit in carrying out your duty to a client or employer. This extends to benefits others close to you might receive as a result of your actions. Appearance matters here, and even if there is no true conflict of interest, if it might appear to outside observers that your ability to act impartially has been compromised, you should still treat this as a conflict of interest. You should always act within the law and code of ethics, but this is about general ethical behaviour, not assessing conflict of interest. Note: although a conflict of interest may be illegal or against the code of ethics in some cases, this is not a necessary condition to make it a conflict of interest. neerrest - Question 4 0/1 pts What does Rights Ethics say should be considered in the following scenario? Scenario: A new production plant for a dangerous chemical has been built in a small town of 1000 people. The plant employs 20 townspeople, and pays well. There are strong suspicions that material from the plant is contaminating the water supply and causing people to get sick. The plant owner is entitled to operate a legal business; the workers are entitled to well-paying jobs; the townspeople are entitled to access to clean water and good health The plant owners must adequately train the workers and instill a culture of care for the environment; workers have an obligation to follow environmental regulations and work protocols; townspeople have a responsibility to report environmental contamination The employment for the 20 workers, profits of the plant owners, and tax revenues for the town must be balanced against the health of the townspeople and the environment https://canvas.ubc.ca/courses/122073/quizzes/629212 4/6
