Teachers with diverse backgrounds bring a wealth of perspectives, enriching learning
experiences, and understanding amongst students. Their varied experiences contribute to more
dynamic classroom environments as well as the needs of a diverse student body.
Diverse
professional backgrounds will also create diverse responses to data. In this case study, an
argument arises on whether to change the curriculum that is working or update it to be more
beneficial for the students. Based on the program that is currently being used the average
performance level is 76
th
percentile while based on the demographics of the school the
performance level should be in the 90
th
percentile.
Conflict
Mrs. New who is a first-year teacher at this school believes that by working with other
teachers over the summer to better align the curriculum to the assessment measures it will help
the school account for the state public school standards as well as the content students need and
are interested in. Mrs. Vet, who is a veteran teacher of 16 years, believes that since Mrs. New is
new to the school, she has not been there long enough to make that suggestion. Mrs. Vet believes
that since the program has been working there is not a need to change it. She also believes that
once Mrs. New has been there longer, she will become confident with the structured program
that is already set in place.
Solution
Resolving differences among teachers involves open communication, collaboration, and a
positive approach. Although Mrs. New is a new teacher she still deserves to be respected as a
professional. I would encourage Mrs. Vet to remember that she too was once a first-year teacher
at our school and would not appreciate her opinion being shunned due to her lack of tenure at the
school. I would establish clear expectations for communication between staff members, which

includes fostering a culture of mutual respect which is critical to the success of the school. Mrs.
New offers a new perspective on teaching a certain demographic of students that Mrs. Vet is not
accustomed to so her opinions should in fact be considered. Both parties need to remember the
common goal which is to have an achievement score within the 90
th
percentile.
A detailed timeline and logical plan for the revision and implementation of the
curriculum will be as follows. As an administrator, I believe that it is necessary for the
curriculum to change to meet the standards. Jorgenson states that “there have been an upwelling
of developments featuring research-based, classroom-proven “best practice” teaching strategies-
accompanied by pioneering discoveries about learning and learners that are too compelling to

e”
(Jorgenson).
First, the need for assessments that align with the curriculum are
necessary. However, they will not always be one size fits all. There will be times when students
will require accommodation. During the school year teachers will be responsible for reporting to
their grade level leader what methods are working and what is not as well as any suggestions for
curriculum changes that have had to be made thus far. This information will be given to the
curriculum design team. This team will be responsible for outlining learning objectives and goals
as well as developing any new content or making modifications to existing content. During this
time if any non-conventional teaching methods are producing a better result than previously
reported other teachers are encouraged to try them in their classrooms and see what kind of
program has been made. Optional teaching materials will be provided to the teachers when they
return in August and we will use the data from testing to determine if the new curriculum updates
are meeting the needs of the students in a more effective way.
