There are many ways to effectively use technology in the classroom as well as at
home, but I will focus on three categories that are useful for both. Technology is such a
huge part of our everyday lives; we may not realize how much we rely on it to make it
through the day. The three categories that technology is used in the class and at home are:
hardware, communication, and learning management (
5 Common Uses of Technology in
The Classroom and The Problem with Each, 2022
).
When it comes to hardware, we all at one point in our lives used a calculator and
when you get to the harder math like calculus, calculators are your savior. Ipads and
chrome books are another item that we use daily in the class and home for online work
and tests. At our school we have online applications called Aleks, brain pop, and
Flocabulary. These applications keep track of the student’s progress, and this helps the
teacher see where a child might need a little extra help and they are able to adjust the
programs for the students. The great thing about these applications for learning is the
adjust to how a student is doing. For instance, if they are having trouble with one section,
it will keep doing those types of problems until the student is able to pass. This is great
because if the student has a section that is super easy, it will move onto more challenging
problems, and this helps keep a child’s interest and helps with monotony. Hardware will
lead us into learning management since these are also used with the iPad and chrome
books.
Learning management is a way for students and parents to keep track of their
child’s grades and progress. These includes google classroom, blackboard, and canvas.
This is how the teacher can communicate with parents and students with announcements
and what assignments are due that week. This also helps keep teachers stay organized
3
along with students which makes it a lot easier for students to keep track of their work
since its all-digital. Having
the potential to make information and resources immediately
accessible to learners, and while that was always the case with textbooks, technology
makes this information more easily searchable, richer with multimedia, and potentially
social beyond the classroom (
5 Common Uses of Technology in The Classroom and The
Problem with Each, 2022
). Along with learning management tool, we also need
communication tool for assignments and ways to contact the teacher.
Communication tools allow students to research and teachers to
share not
only
lesson plans,
but digital resources, assessment data, and even whole-group, away-
from-school communication (

Problem with Each, 2022
). This could be a simple YouTube video for student to watch
that has everything needed for a research project or a refresher before a test. This helps a
teacher because its recorded and can be sent to absent student or for students to rewatch.
There is also a Remind app that sends texts to students and parent for communication and
let the student know of assignment due soon or what’s coming up. This is a great way to
make sure you are communication with parents and students, which is crucial in a student
education.
Technology is constantly changing and we as educators must keep up with it to
stay on the cutting edge of teaching. I feel like kids these days are born with a phone in
their hands and we need to keep up with what the kids are into, so we can keep their
attention and teach the best we can. Technology is so helpful when it comes to teaching
whether checking for understanding or tapping into the curiosity of students. Technology
has opened new frontiers not available to the previous generations.
