HW5: Course Planning Research and Academic Timeline
Purpose
HW5 will bring you further into the second phase of goal discernment: academic goal exploration. In this assignment, you will begin to understand the course requirements for your program and develop a
timeline for completing them. Learning Outcomes
This assignment supports the following course learning outcomes:

Students will develop a strategic plan for completing community college academic goals, including certificates, diplomas, and/or associate degrees.
●
Students will develop a strategic plan for transferring to a university and preparing for a new career.
Grading
This assignment is worth 100 points
. See the rubric on the last page of this assignment for details about requirements and scoring. The assignment grade will count as 10% of your total grade in ACA 122.

Step 1:
Download the planning document for your chosen program here at Durham Tech.
Use the Durham Tech Programs and Pathways
website to find your pathway and program. Download the appropriate planning document. (If you are a university transfer student, download the Course Selection Guide. For all other programs, download the Plan of Study
.
**You will need to submit your
Course Selection Guide or Plan of Study with this assignment in order to receive full credit!**

Step 2:
Download any additional planning documents (see below).
In addition to your Course Selection Guide, university transfer students should also download the “Baccalaureate Degree Plan” for your future major at the university you plan to transfer to. Use the information page for your chosen program at the Durham Tech Programs and Pathways
website, and click on the link for Baccalaureate Degree Plans
.

Step 3: Review your planning documents to understand all classes needed for your credential.
Look over your Plan of Study
or Course Selection Guide to see what courses, and how many, are required for you. Some Plans of Study are organized by semester, but your course loads and sequencing may vary depending on whether you are part-time vs. full-time, and depending on which prerequisites you may need. 4.)
Step 4: For each course listed on your Plan of Study
or Course Selection Guide
, use the Durham Tech Course Catalog within SelfService
to identify the credit hours, and any prerequisites or corequisites for that course. List these on the Course Planning Worksheet (p. 3).
You will need to look up each course on your Plan of Study or Course Selection Guide, to get the necessary information about it!
In some cases, you may have options. For example, your course planning document may list “Humanities elective”, and you may have the choice between several different courses to fulfill that one requirement. In that instance, you do not
need to look up each
Humanities option, just the one that YOU plan to take in order to fulfill the requirement. Each course description will tell you how many credit HW5 – Page 1

hours the class is worth, and any prerequisites and/or corequisites for the course. You should write down all
of this information for each course you will have to take
. Use the table on the Course Planning Worksheet
(page 3 of this packet) to document the necessary information about all your required courses. You can add additional lines or attach an additional sheet if necessary.
Let’s pretend that when I look at my Plan of Study
or Advising
Guide
for my program, I see that one class I need is ENG 111. When I look it up in the Durham Tech course catalog in SelfService, here is what I find:

Prerequisites
are requirements that you must complete BEFORE enrolling in a particular class. Some courses have
prerequisites and some do not. ENG 111 above has three possible prerequisites: students must have placed out of, or completed one of the following: DRE 098 or
ENG 002 or
BSP-4002 before they can enroll in ENG 111. ●
Corequisites
are requirements that you might need to take at the same time as being enrolled in a particular class, unless you have already done the specified requirements in a previous semester. Many classes do not have
corequisites, but some do. ENG 111 has a corequisite of ENG011 that may
be required based on your placement.

To log in to Self-Service, go to: https://selfservice.durhamtech.edu

Use the same username and password that you use to log into Sakai, or into your email. ●
Once in Self-Service, select “Student Planning.” (See screenshot below for assistance)
On the next screen, you will see several tabs: Click on the tab that says “
Timeline
.”

The default semester being shown is your current semester. Click the small blue arrow (<) sign to the left to scroll all the way to the first column, which should say “Non-term Courses.”

Classes in the “Non-term Courses” column to the left represent the student’s existing course placements. The student does not need to enroll in any of the courses in this column, because they have “placed out” of them. For example, if a Durham Tech class has a prerequisite of ENG 002, this

The “Non-term Courses” column will list any course placements
that
you have, based on high school GPA, placement test results, or
courses already completed. ●
You may see a check mark (
✔
) or the letters “CC” or “EP”, but they all
mean that you have “placed” out of those courses and should not plan
to take them. You should not include any of these courses in your
future semester’s planning! ●
In the screenshot above, the student has “placed out” of ENG 002,
MAT 003, and other ENG and MAT courses. If a class on the student’s Plan of Study or Course Selection Guide required one of those prerequisites, this student would not need to take them. The same applies for the courses ENG 011, MAT 010, MAT 021, and MAT 043 that you see in the student’s Non-term Courses
column. If the student wanted to take a class that had one of those as a corequisite, the student would not need the corequisite, because they have already “placed out” of it. ●
Note – course placement is not
the same as course credit!!! Just because a course appears here does not mean
that you have earned the credit hours for it toward your degree! 6.)
Step 6: Use the information that you gathered in the Course Planning Worksheet (page 3 of this packet) to search for and add classes to your future semesters on your Academic Timeline.
One-by-one, you will search for and add each course from your Course Planning Worksheet to a future semester in your “Timeline” on Self-Service. Even if you plan to leave Durham Tech or transfer out before completing your full credential, you should plan ALL of your future courses as if
you will be here until you finish your program. Failure
to do so will result in points lost for this assignment!
Below are instructions for adding courses to your Timeline in Self-Service:

Use the Search for Courses
box to type the name/prefix of a course to add to your Timeline
(for example, you might type “ENG 111” or “ENG”).

If you have completed EFL 074 and EFL 094, you have completed the equivalent of
ENG 002 and do not need plan ENG 002 in your Timeline.

Once you have found the course you want to add, click “
Add Course to Plan

Next, from the “Select a Term” pull-down menu, select the semester you plan to take the class, then click Add Course to Plan. (see screenshot below for assistance)

After trying to add a course to your plan, you may see a yellow warning reminding you of the prerequisite(s) or corequisite(s) for the course. Check that you have either added the appropriate requisite to your plan
, or that you have already fulfilled the appropriate requisite
. If you still get the alert after doing so, just continue adding courses to your Timeline.
