“Time Management” Jackie Tobar Southern New Hampshire University ENG-130: Written Communications John Chernega February 10, 2023 Would you believe that time management is something that most people misunderstand and misuse? Are you a Contractor or a self-employed freelancer, would you say you use your time wisely or would you say you're one of those who misunderstand how to use time effectively? This article suggests that people tend to get more stressed when they don't have enough time in a day to get both job requirements and errands at home done before the day ends. "Beat the Clock" by Kathryn Tyler ( 2003 ) is an insightful piece that highlights the importance of mastering time management to boost productivity and reduce stress. The article offers valuable suggestions on how to effectively manage time and emphasizes the significance of taking breaks
and allowing for downtime without sacrificing productivity. Furthermore, it references research that underscores the positive mental health effects of strategic time management. When we have poor time management skills, it's almost as if time flies by without even realizing it. Six hours spent well is better than twelve hours spent poorly. Some examples of time being misused are when people try to cut corners to get a job done, meaning they leave a step out or they rush through the steps not double-checking their work. Another example of misused time is people think that if their job gets done faster like turning up the speed of the conveyor belt to move it along quicker. I mean we have all seen that episode of "I Love Lucy" when Lucy and her friend Ethel are working in a candy factory and they have to wrap chocolates, and it starts to move faster than they could keep up so they have to start eating it or stuffing it somewhere just to be able to keep up with the speed of the conveyor. When you don't do something correctly the first-time chances are you just made yourself more work because you or someone else will need to come back over to the job to fix whatever went wrong. Have you thought about the way you will keep track of expenses and profits? As mentioned before, it’s essential to acknowledge that effective time management strategies can be challenging to implement, especially when dealing with an overwhelming workload. However, by assessing individual circumstances and devising a tailored approach, one can minimize stress levels and maximize productivity. It's worth noting that there's no one-size-fits-all solution for time management challenges, as each situation is unique. But with careful planning and consistent effort, anyone can achieve their goals and optimize their use of time. When using the proper tools and organizational skills, you can stay ahead of the game and on top of all your important tasks. Some of the examples that are mentioned are "set priorities, stay organized, use a daily planning calendar, set goals and how to achieve those goals," ( Tyler, K. 2003 ). Some of
the research done by the HR managers who were presented with the information found that people who had taken the training courses found themselves having more time in a day for getting tasks done in a timely matter. If you were given the option to take a training course to get the effective tools you need to run a successful business, would you not jump at that opportunity? I agree with Kathryn Tyler about using effective tools to help manage time, and for those who are self-employed I believe would benefit for the mere fact of “Information overload” for when it comes to all the records keeping and paper tracking that you will be doing to make sure you stay making profits. Back when she wrote her article for the HR managers in 2003 technology was just barely starting to get big. Nowadays technology has brought everything to our fingertips, just a click of a button, making it that much easier for Contractors as yourself or self-employed freelancers. Bringing more jobs and more ways to help you stay organized and use your time in a more effective way. If you use your time wisely you will find new ways to market your business, promoting your work with pictures, and getting reviews from past customers. Not only do I believe that those who are self-employed would benefit but also students coming into the work field. When starting off the correct way at an early age sets your path and foundation ahead of you for nothing but success. I say this with experience and find out later in life the real meaning of time management and how I have been using it poorly for so long. Using the proper tools, you learn how to prioritize and set goals to achieve, it helps you stay organized, you won't lose your focus.
