ENG-105 Topic 1 DQ 1 Take a moment to reflect on past writing experiences from your academic, personal, or professional life. Answer the following questions as your initial post. Plan to have 150-200 words. 1. What was writing like for you as a child or young adult? Do you recall any vivid writing experiences? 2. How do you currently use writing in academic, personal, and professional experiences? 3. How might writing be used in future academic, personal, and professional experiences? Respond to your peers’ reflections about their own writing experiences, finding similarities and differences and considering the role of writing in your life now and in the future. What I can remember how writing, as early as elementary age, was the ability to be creative and imaginary. Referencing animals to different colors. Making up stories that the mind comes up with that is fiction or fairy tales. Then, writing in journals, I recall during my time in school that there was a period that journal writing was mandatory. High school writing became a little intense in which I showed no interest to. Currently, I used writing on a daily from academic writing by posting and replying Discussion Questions to instructors or peers. Since, I started GUC in August 2019, I see myself writing more often. The last course, PHI-105 I experience my first time writing a persuasive essay. Currently I work as a Human Resources/Payroll communication through email is frequently use among co-worker, potential employees or customers. Along with email, I write letters to potential employees of job offers or denial. Writing will be used often in future academic settings. I am planning that as I keep moving forward that the writing may be more intense. At times it gives me a little anxiety. However, since my first class GCU’s faulty are very helpful with assisting a student to become successful. Topic 1 DQ 2 Read the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s page on ADHD; the link is provided below. Use the close reading techniques described in Chapter 1 of the e-book. It may be helpful to print off the page and annotate the text. Then, summarize the website in 150-250 words. Your summary should be similar to the example provded in Chapter 1 of the textbook. Your summary should answer at least three of the questions below: 1. What key facts or details does the CDC share about ADHD? 2. In addition to the facts, what impression does the CDC create about ADHD? In other words, how does it make readers feel or what does it make readers think about ADHD? 3. What would motivate the CDC, which is a government institution, to post a page about ADHD?
4. Why, in your view, is the Web page a good or bad method for the CDC to distribute information? 5. How do you think the average reader would react to the CDC's page about ADHD? (Hint: Do not try to summarize every detail. Focus on the main points the page is trying to convey. It is helpful to think of the CDC's page in terms of its sections, rather than its many facts.) During the week, read and respond to your classmates’ summaries. Did you emphasize the same points in your summary that they did? Did you have the same impression about ADHD after you summarized it? Why or why not? Link to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s page on ADHD: http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/adhd/facts.html NOTE: If you click on the link and it will not open, paste the link into the browser. According to Center for Disease Control and Prevention (2019), neurodevelopment disorder, which is also known as ADHD, is the common among childhood. The website give brief details about signs and symptoms of ADHD with three different types of ADHD. It is still unknown what the underlining cause of ADHD, however, genetics plays a big factor. There are several steps to determine if a child has ADHD and it start by having a medical exam with hearing and vision test. A combination of therapy and medication is the best treatment however, medication is not recommended for preschool-age (4-5 years old). Adapting to a healthy lifestyle will be easier for a child with ADHD. It provides information on how to get help with direct links and toll-free number. After reading the information from CDC that ADHD is mostly common in children. Symptoms can be managed with treatment or medication, consistency and follow-ups with updated treatment plans throughout the process. The information was clear and concise. The website provided information in Spanish and English direct links for additional information associating with ADHD. The images stand out and appealing. Overall this website is a good website that clear and concise for anyone who Google search about ADHD. References: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. (2019). What is ADHD? Retrieved from https://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/adhd/facts.html Topic 1 DQ 3 In the rhetorical analysis assignment, you will be expected to demonstrate an understanding that every text is created for a unique situation and audience. You will need to act on this by analyzing the decisions made by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on their website about ADHD. This includes the persuasive appeals the CDC uses. Aristotle believed that speakers and writers used three kinds of persuasive appeals. Logos is an appeal to the audience’s powers of reason or logic. Pathos is an appeal to emotions or senses. Ethos is the personal appeal, charisma, or credibility of the speaker or writer. These three appeals are known as the rhetorical triangle because all three sides work together to make a text effective or not.
In your own words, explain the concepts of pathos, logos, and ethos and why they are important appeals to recognize in a text. Next, use the CDC's page about ADHD to analyze the ethos, logos, and pathos in the document. Consider the following questions in your response: What do you think about the logic presented in the document? What do you think about its emotional appeal What about its appeal to authority or credibility? Does the CDC effectively present each of the rhetorical appeals? Why or why not? Link to Centers of Disease Control’s website: http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/adhd/facts.html According to Aristotle, logos, pathos and ethos are three kind of appeals that are used by writers or speakers to convince audiences. Logos is to convince an audience by using reason and citing facts. Pathos is to be able to persuade by appealing to emotions. Ethos is convincing an audience by an author’s credibility or authority. The three are also known as rhetorical triangle which, effectively working together or not. Upon analyzing the CDC website, I notice that the rhetorical triangle is working together to effectively convince the audience. There are clear facts about what is ADHD, signs and symptoms, different types, the cause, treatments and resources. The actual information does show logos. I think there is little pathos by the “Get Help” section of persuading an audience to get help from a medical professional. I can see ethos and its appeal to authority as the website is created by CDC, Center for Disease Control and Prevention, which is known worldwide. I do feel that CDC effectively used the rhetorical appeals as it gave facts on ADHD, encouraging someone to get help and making themselves as a trusted sources with authority. Topic 2 DQ 1 In 150-200 words, please analyze the document’s purpose and audience. Who, for example, is the CDC's audience? What are the CDC's beliefs about ADHD, and how does the CDC's Web page relate itself to those beliefs? Why would the federal government post a Web page about ADHD? What role does the general public expect the government to play regarding disorders such as ADHD? During the week, go back and read some of your classmates' posts. Do you agree with their views? The CDC website on ADHD convey its message towards parents, educators, professional, students or any individual that seeks information on ADHD. Information provide is clear and concise on signs and symptoms, three different types, cause, treatment, and seeking help. There are direct links throughout the website for more in depth information on each topic. Nearly millions of children are diagnosis with neurodevelopmental disorders, also known as ADHD. The US Department of Health and Human Services wants to inform readers’ information on ADHD. Furthermore, this diagnosis is manageable with consistent behavior therapy and medication treatment. Most importantly, maintaining a healthy lifestyle with developing healthy eating habits to daily physical activity. The general public expects a

government agency like, US Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to educate and provide updated information on disorders such as ADHD. The information provided will assist the general public on general knowledge and assistance on getting help with disorder that are uncommon to the individual. Topic 2 DQ 2 Review the CDC website and answer at least three of the questions below: 1. Who is the writer? 2. What is the writer’s purpose? 3. Who is the intended audience? 4. What is the broader cultural context that motivated the writing of the article? 5. How does the writer establish ethos? 6. Does the writer appeal to logos (logic)? 7. Does the writer appeal to pathos (emotions)? 8. Do you feel that the website is effective? Why or why not? Use these questions to guide the content of your rhetorical analysis. During the week, review your classmates’ posts. What are some similarities and differences between your response and your peers’ responses? The writer for the web page, CDC, is a reader-based prose, known as audience-based writing. In addition, the writer is an expert on the topic of ADHD. The information provided by the writer is updated and indicated on the web page. The writer information can be used as a scholarly resource. The writer’s purpose is to inform the audience about general information on ADHD. The writer give clear and concise information on symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, measurable outcomes and additional links for further information or getting help. The general public, parents, or students are the intended audience. This website can be for anyone in the general public who is conducting an internet search on information about ADHD. It gears to be more for parents who is dealing with a child, who may or have the common, childhood disorder. Students who are conducting research for a written paper cans use the information as part of the scholarly research. There are similarities response on the CDC website. I believe that all three rhetorical appeals were effectively used by the CDC. Some indicated that Pathos were not being used. However, after learning more in depth of rhetorical appeals. Pathos were used by the pictures, images and bold “Get Help!” text with an exclamation mark. Topic 3 DQ 1 As the name implies, visual rhetoric means the part of communication that involves what is seen, including colors, forms, and the way what we are seeing is laid out on the page. Font type and size can
also be included in visual design. The term rhetoric can sometimes cause confusion, so for clarity’s sake; here it means techniques used for the sake of persuasion. Keeping these definitions in mind, describe an image from one of the CDC website pages on ADHD (http://www.cdc.gov/NCBDDD/adhd/index.html) that you find to be especially powerful and persuasive. What makes it so? Identify the image’s purpose and audience. Please be sure to provide a description of your chosen image so that your classmates and instructor can also analyze your selection. During the week, read your classmates' posts and explain the degree to which you agree or disagree about the effectiveness of the visuals the CDC has provided on its page about ADHD. The image that image that stood out the most was the in the “Treatment” topic in the sub topic “Recommendations”. The image is located underneath the bold text, “ADHD Treatment Recommendations”, towards the right side. There are parents, father and mother, child, who is sitting on the mother lap, and a medical provider. They are setting at a table, where the child is looking down at the clip board with a document clipped to it. The mother who is smiling with her hand on the child lower back, showing affection. The child is smiling as he is looking down at the document with information. The father appears to be smiling as well. The parents show support and love to their child through his treatment. The medical professor looking directly at the child with a relaxed and consoling face expression. The genre target by this image is parents. This image conveys a message that there is happiness throughout the treatment process with a medical provider. The child having the biggest smile on face indicates happiness. The sense of feeling okay by seeking help or treatment for your child who is diagnosis with ADHD. There is a sense of normality for a family that has a child with the disorder. Topic 3 DQ 2 Writing an essay can be divided into at least three main parts—the introduction, the body, and the conclusion. Looking further into the essay, the thesis statement can be implicit (implied) or explicit (a line can be drawn under it). Depending upon the length of the essay, the introduction might be more than one paragraph, but the thesis statement should generally appear at the end of the introduction. Body paragraphs follow, and each has its own unique topic sentence, the first sentence that contains the unique supporting point for that paragraph. The conclusion needs a clear transitional word or phrase at the beginning (but not "In conclusion"), and it revisits the thesis and each main point. However, no new information belongs in the conclusion. Please review the following video Writing Process about writing introduction paragraphs. For the first essay, you wrote a rhetorical analysis of a public document. Please share your thesis statement for your rhetorical analysis essay. During the week, respond to your classmates with constructive feedback about their thesis statements. Here is my thesis statement at the end of the introduction paragraph.
"The US Department of Health and Human Services, Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), website effectively communicates its disorder on ADHD, to parents and students with the use of three artistic proofs ethos, logos and pathos. Topic 3 DQ 3 Use the following checklist to help make final revisions on your essay: Are the introduction, body, and conclusion clearly defined? Does the introduction provide sufficient background for the reader? Is there a thesis statement that makes the main ideas of the essay clear? Does every paragraph address the subject matter of the thesis in some way? Does the essay show that the writer has a knowledge of the audience? Is there credible support, specific examples, detail to make your points clearly? Is the tone and voice formal enough for an academic essay? Have all requirements of the assignment been met? Are all sources credible? Have all quoted, paraphrased, and summarized material been cited in-text with a corresponding reference on the reference page? Is the grammar and punctuation correct? Has the writer spell checked the essay? Is the title capitalized correctly? Are the correct margin and font and other requirements of GCU style correct? Share with your peers the areas of strength in your essay discovered during this process. What aspects of your essay need improvement? Upon using the checklist to make my final revisions on the Rhetorical Analysis of a Public Document I notice the strength of my essay was within the GCU writing style requirement by using the GCU Style template that is available in the library. The thesis statement is clear with three main ideas and located at the end of the introduction paragraph. Each body of paragraph reflect the three main ideas stated in the thesis statement. The sources used were credible by retrieving the information from the library database. The area of improvement needed is making sure that grammar and punctuation are correct. Commas being placed before and after a word that is needed. The introduction paragraph can be stronger with sufficient background to engage the reader or intended audience. Also, making sure that data being quote, paraphrased and summarized is cited in-text correctly within APA formatting standards.

Topic 4 DQ 1 Your next major assignment is the review essay. For this assignment, you will need to select a website related to ADHD/ADD and then compare the site to a set of criteria. View the tutorial on the GCU Library website titled "Evaluating Websites." Take notes about the five criteria while you are watching it. Which three of the five criteria do you find to be the most important? Do they seem like enough to evaluate a website? How would you define each criterion? Why is each one important? During the week, review your classmates’ posts and discuss similarities and differences between your response and your peers’ responses. The video tutorial of “Evaluating Websites” on the GCU Library website was very helpful of understand the fiver criteria when evaluating a website. I believe that all five criteria is very important and it was a little difficult to narrow it down to three. The three criteria that I believe are the most important are: authority, accuracy, and objectivity. The authority criterion is the ability to identify the author and verify the author’s credibility. This is important to make sure the writer or author has the credibility to write about the information. The criteria of accuracy is being able to identify the qualifications of the website. The ability to know who the publisher is by identify the websites URL domain extension. The three criterion of objectivity is the goal of the message that is being convey that does not have bias. The importance of supporting claims by citing where the information was retrieved. Also, evaluating the website of numerous amount advertisement that can lead to bias. The three criteria of authority, accuracy and objectivity is the minimal to evaluate a website. As the other two criteria: currency and coverage are as much important. Topic 4 DQ 2 Which website did you choose to evaluate for your essay assignment? Please provide the URL of the website and the name. Post a message in which you describe your web site (at least one paragraph), and then offer some analysis of the website and how it meets the criteria (at least one more paragraph). Which of the criteria you learned about earlier will you apply to the website and why? Do you feel your website matches up to the criteria, and does it appear to be an effective and valuable website? Use details and examples from the website to support your answer. During the week, review your classmates’ posts and discuss similarities and differences between your response and your peers’ responses. The website that I am conducting my evaluation on is the Children and Adult with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD) Website URL: https://chadd.org/ Upon reviewing several websites on ADHD, I decided to choose the Children and Adult with Attention- Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD). A 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that is providing information, support, and advocacy to adults, parents, caregivers, educators and professional about the disorder. The
website was well-balance with detailed information, pictures, and warm welcoming colors. When hoovering over each tab a drop down window with additional subtopics. CHADD website does met the five criteria. Authority was well noticeable in the “About US” section which lists several authors’ credibility and contact information. The accuracy qualifications of its URL domain extension of “.org”. The objectivity was clearly identify of its goal and free from bias. The criteria of currency was met with dates of when the website was updated and clear of dead links. The coverage criterion was well-balance with images and texts. Out of the five criteria, I decided to apply the following three: authority, accuracy, and objectivity. I believe that CHADD website matches the criteria and is an effective and valuable website. CHADD website was well-balance with allowing the intended genre to make contact with the author, if needed. In addition, the contact information for CHADD is on the bottom of every screen on their website. Data and statistics were supported with in-text citation that includes reference list. The website has the up to date, date at the bottom of screen on every screen of the website. In addition, information that was update will be noted after the paragraph. CHADD is an effective website for parents, caregivers, educators or professional seeking information on ADHD. Topic 5 DQ 1 Go back to your readings in Chapter 4 of the text on bias. Reread the information to help you answer this question. Remember that bias can be found on a website. View the website noted here: https://www.naturalchild.org/articles/guest/john_breeding.html . What indications do you have that the site is biased or not biased? List three things that appear to make this site biased or unbiased. Finally, based on the criteria you have been learning about websites, do you believe this site is true and honest, or does it have an agenda? How might you address bias in your evaluation essay? During the week, go back and review your classmates’ posts and discuss similarities and differences between your response and your peers’ responses? The title of the article, “Does ADHD Even Exist? The Ritalin Sham”, has a biases tone in itself. It comes off as the author or writer believes that ADHD does not exist and a strong belief against Ritalin. The title of each subtopic: ADHD: Nothing but a Sham, The Significance of Oppression Theory, Lies My Doctor Told Me, Suffer the Children, and Ritalin Use – Simply Out of Control. It shows the author’s personal emotion on disorder and medication. Certain words in quotation marks which, display the author’s dislike feelings towards it. Upon my review, first person writing was indicated which make this a bias and opinionate website. The website did not meet the five criteria standards of a trustworthy website. The author is trying to manipulate a reader that ADHD does not exist and Ritalin is a toxic drug, as to how the author describe it. In order to avoid bias in my evaluation essay or any essay, is by supporting my thesis by using logical appeal. Review my writing to make sure it there is not words or statements that express my personal emotion. In addition, using facts from scholarly sources with in-text citation to support my claim.
Topic 5 DQ 2 One way to disagree with a review is to question the expectations, or criteria, that an author has for the subject of his or her review. Describe how well the website you have chosen for your evaluation essay meets your expectations/criteria. During the week, review your classmates’ posts and discuss similarities and differences between your response and your peers’ responses. Children and Adult with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD), was the website I decided to write my essay on. CHADD website did meet the expectations of the three criteria that was chosen: authority, accuracy, and objectivity. There was information on the author’s credibility which, allows reader to reassure that the information written is by a credible writer that is an expert on the topic. Also, contact information was provided if the reader/genre wanted to make contact with the authors. There was information to identify who the publisher was and URL domain was .org. There in-text citation and references list to support the claims that were made. The website was not covered with a lot of advertising however, there were sporadic advertisement throughout the website. Topic 5 DQ 3 Provide a sample in-text citation that you plan to use in your evaluation essay you are currently writing. Use one of the head/body/tail combinations from our textbook (Chapter 2). Then create a second citation for the same source, but use a different head/body/tail combination. As the week progresses, comment on your class mates' in-text citations. Do you think they were cited correctly? Why or why not? How do different patterns create different impressions about the source? During the week, go back and review your classmates’ posts and discuss similarities and differences between your response and your peers’ responses? According to the Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD), 2020, about eleven percent of school-age children affected by ADHD also known as, neurodevelopment disorder (para. 2). “About eleven percent of school-age children affected by ADHD also known as, neurodevelopment disorder." (CHADD, 2020, para. 2) Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (2020). About ADHD – overview . Retrieved from https://chadd.org/about- adhd/overview/ Both in-text citation is great to use in essays. The ability to cite different ways than just one. I think the first in-text citation is more effective than the second one. The first in-text citation will let the audience know from the beginning of the sentence where the sources is coming from. The second one, the audience would not know until the end of the sentence. Topic 6 DQ 1

Do some research to identify a trend, event, or a policy related to ADHD. If you look on news websites, you can identify and discuss what reporters are currently writing about ADHD. If you look at the policy statements by institutions such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/adhd/facts.html ) or American Psychological Association ( APA.org ), you can identify and discuss which policies or advice they provide. You could also try finding events (either past events or future ones) about ADHD at the local, state, or national level and then explain what one or more events were (or will be) about. Then, summarize your findings and report them to the class by responding to this discussion question. During the week, go back and review your classmates’ posts and discuss similarities and differences between your response and your peers’ responses There were several trends that were identified while research the American Psychological Association website. The stereotype of gender differences in ADHD that boys or male are more likely to be diagnosis with ADHD than girls. However, ADHD affect girls or woman differently. Girls are not usually hyperactive and are more likely to have the attention-deficit section of the disorder like: low self-esteem, depression, and anxiety. If left untreated the issues will transfer into adulthood. A woman who has not been treated for ADHD is more likely to birth children with ADHD. By this time, women are likely being treated at the same time as their child. Recommendation for treatment for women with ADHD is a combination of medication and ADHD focused therapy. Also, for girls, treatment recommendation were medication, family therapy, and other invention. American Psychological Association. (2020). Gender difference in ADHD. Retrieved from https://www.apa.org/topics/adhd/gender Topic 6 DQ 2 What are some of the causes or consequences related to the trend you identified earlier this week? (Or, if you posted something about a policy or event, what do you see as the causes or consequences of those?) Who (or what) do you think is responsible for the problem, or who (or what) deserves credit for solving some part of the problem? During the week, review your classmates’ posts and discuss similarities and differences between your response and your peers’ responses. One of the trends I identify and discuss on my Topic 6 DQ 2, was the stereotype of gender difference that boys are more likely to be diagnosis with ADHD than girls. Studies indicated that boys were more often diagnosis with ADHD due to having more signs and symptoms of hyperactivity and impulsivity. Medical providers, educators, and mental health providers are more quickly to diagnosis boys with the disorder instead of accurately conducting an assessment. More than likely, during the assessment if a child is showing some symptoms, they are automatically being diagnosis with ADHD without completing the full the assessment. I believe credit should be given to the ones that were able to recognize this trend of gender differences diagnosis in ADHD. In addition, credit should be given to one’s involved in the research that girls are affected by ADHD differently than boys. Topic 7 DQ 1
According to strategies discussed in Chapter 4 of the textbook, post a message in which you explain the techniques you will use for your introductory paragraph and why they might be effective for you. Then write or revise your introductory paragraph using the techniques you have chosen. Post your introduction along with your explanation. During the week, respond to others’ introductions and explain what you think they did well. Also, offer some advice for revision. You may also offer counterarguments by explaining how someone might disagree with their view. In the introductory paragraph, I want to be able to grasp the attention of the audience. In addition, making sure that some background information is stated about the subject. Also, not to be overly opinionated or passionate because this may affect the readers or audience. In addition, a well-written thesis to state the argument of the essay. My introduction paragraph: Should a rise in ADHD diagnosis raise questions? The CDC, Center for Disease Control and Prevention, (2020), a well-known government entity, define ADHD as one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders, that is initially diagnosed in childhood (para. 1). Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), that has been described as a childhood-onset developmental disturbance of children and adolescences (Banaschewski et al., 2017). Not only, describe as a common, early onset, developmental disorder of children, it is becoming increasingly well recognized worldwide. There is a global trend of its diagnosis making it an area of growing interest in physicians. The sudden and unneeded rise is a growing trend in ADHD diagnosis driven by over- diagnosis, misdiagnose, and gender influence diagnose. Topic 7 DQ 2 It is important to distinguish between your perspective and other perspectives regarding your commentary topic. What are some of the other perspectives you see? Summarize them briefly. Next, summarize your own perspective. In what ways does your perspective differ from other perspectives? Why is your perspective different? Some of the other perspectives I seen on ADHD is treatment and medication. There are some that are with treatment and some that are against treatment this goes the same for medication. There are many who are against medicating a child to control his or her behaviors and seeking other alternatives. For example, placing a child on a Feingold diet to evaluate if symptoms decrease without the use of psychotropic medication. My perspective is that children are more frequently diagnosed with ADHD even if they do not meet the entire criteria. Once they become diagnosed then mental health professional prescribe the child medication to control behaviors such as: hyperactivity or impulsivity. My perspective and other perspective maybe different or similar because this is our opinion. An opinion is neither right or wrong unless it is proven and support with scholarly resources.
