Monica Robles ENG-670 Dr. James Watkins December 10, 2023 Journal: A Collection of Pedagogical Strategies I. Visual: a. Storyboards: This strategy can help stimulate creativity by encouraging brainstorming, and when used in a group environment, encourage discussion. When I used storyboards with expository writing topics it would help highlight subtopics and provide a direction I could easily follow when I moved on to my first draft. b. Reconstruct and Restore: Reconstruct text into images and symbols and then restoring the visuals back into text. I would use this method to show how aspects of the research that students find can be plugged into the expository writing method. II. Aural: a. Half In/Half Out: Half of the class is shown the first half of a writing method, the other half is taught the second half of the method and when brought back together explain the missing half to the other group. A chemistry teacher used this method which resulted in comedic attempts at scientific experiments showing the importance of listening carefully.
b. Real-time Feedback: Listen to the comments and questions of others to refine and narrow down ideas. I would use this strategy during the brainstorming phase if I were to give my class freedom to choose their topic under a larger umbrella. III. Read/Write: a. Simplify: Translate wordy ideas and principles into other words. Most of my English composition classes from middle and high school included a review of this strategy to remind us of ways to avoid plagiarism. b. Lists: Use lists to organize steps and establish structure. I would use lists for various points of the writing process to aid in direction, remind of structure, and remind of common mistakes. IV. Kinesthetic: a. Videos: Visual analogies and metaphors help with seeing concepts play out in a realistic setting. I had a history that showed the same plagiarism and writing steps video before every expository project so that we knew the importance of research and giving credit to the original authors. b. Real Life Examples: Displays, collections, photos, field trips and interviews. In all its forms, this strategy could provide a structure that students would want to mirror in their own work.
