From Issue to Persuasion Ethical and Clinical Issues are related to becoming a behavior health technician (substance abuse and behavior abuse counselor). A moral issue is balancing personal and professional standards. Alcohol and drug addiction counselors must balance what is right for them with what may be right based on professional standards. You, as a counselor, must make difficult decisions daily to maintain confidentiality for the client and the agency’s reputation
. Your thought, feelings, history, or beliefs can not come into play when dealing with a client, no matter if you think it will help if it is against the guidelines of the client’s
care or reflecting on one’s status as a clinician. A clinical issue is dealing with lapses and relapses. Relapses often happen when it comes to alcohol and substance abuse. They usually occur in the difficult early months of treatment. It is surrounded by a community exposed to pressures to relapse, the cravings they experience, and the resistance to change. As a counselor, it is your job to persuade your client to try again. To convince them it can be a lapse, not a relapse. The key to battling a relapse is to educate early. Go through some of the different general relapse prevention strategies early. These topics will be meaningful to the audience because the issues will capture their attention. I, as a writer, will engage with the audience. I will involve my peers in my profession in the case. I will make my topic engaging to the professionals; therefore, they will engage and want to hear more. Sharing personal experiences will help me connect with them. A recent event on the subject matter is also exciting on the subject matter. The topic needs to be enjoyable from beginning to end to keep the audience captivated.
