Assignment Information:
Provides the general assignment information/theme of the assessment.
Create a Literature Review Paper around the theme of:
“
Transforming Food Supply Chains: Digitalisation of Food Supply Chains
”
Assessment Topic Background
The background information relating to the assessment topic is presented here.
Covid-19 and the war in Ukraine have highlighted food security issues on a global scale. Prior to
the onset of Covid-19, over 820 million people had been identified as chronically food insecure, with
food insecurity classified as a crisis level for 135 million. The vulnerability of food supply chains to such
shocks has caused food shortages in both developed and developing countries. These shocks come
at a time when natural disasters, climate change, and the arrival of pests and plagues are already
compromising food security.

Consumer behaviour has aggravated the difficulties faced by food supply chains considering
these shocks. Food inflation, price rise, panic buying, stockpiling, and hoarding, alongside the related
food waste, indicate that all actors in food supply chains have a social responsibility to mitigate the
impacts and prepare strategies to inform a response to similar shocks in the future (Sohag et al. 2021;
Trollman et al., 2021). One strategy that may be adopted is the
digitalization of the food supply chain
.
While consumers are rarely the main motivation for digitalization, they are among the most impacted
by food insecurity.
Despite some positive results seen in the implementation of digital technologies for individual
supply chain actors, the full potential of advanced digital technologies (e.g., Artificial Intelligence, Big
Data, the Internet of Things, Blockchain, and 3D printing) has yet to be fully realized. Harnessing
Industry 4.0 technologies for the benefit of food supply chains has the potential to enable efficient
digital and ecological transitions (Hassoun et al., 2022). Future academic research is needed to
investigate how the
digitalization of food supply chains could positively impact food security
, given
the context of the increasing probability of global shocks to food systems. Some of the suggested
topics you could select, and research are:
1.
Digital Technologies for Enhancing Food Supply Chain Efficiency
2.
Blockchain Applications for Ensuring Food Traceability and Authenticity
3.
IoT and Sensing Technologies for Real-time Monitoring of Food Supply Chains
4.
Data Analytics for Predictive Demand Forecasting and Supply Chain Optimization
5.
Assessing the Social and Environmental Impacts of Digitalization in Food Supply Chains
6.
Enhancing Resilience and Adaptability of Food Supply Chains through Digital Technologies
Assignment Task:
This provides the “assessment task” on what the students are required to complete (i.e., report, case study, presentation, et
c.)
Your task for this assignment is research and prepare a case review paper on ANY ONE of the above
given topics.

Assessment Marking Criteria
The following table should be provided for all assessment(s) with detailed description for each of the
criteria that will be adopted for the coursework marking/feedback for the students.
Part/Section
Total Marks
Title /Abstract
Title - You should try and provide a Clear Title to the Paper.
Abstract - A short summary (250-350 words) to present the overall aim and objective of
the study to the reader.
10 marks
Introduction
This is the general introduction to your paper (literature) and how you plan to address
the key areas of your research and study to the reader.
10 marks
Review Study Paper
•
Quality of academic sources of literature and its relevance to the topic areas of
research (10marks)
•
Relevance of the existing literature and the critical review of the sources and its
context to the overall discussion (10)
•
Critical discussions in response to the discussion topic
–
how is this related to the
overall research topic (30)
•

General Assessment Guidelines and Tips:
Any general assessment guidelines (L7 framework) or any tips to be shared with the students to enable
them to complete the assessment criteria satisfactorily.
▪
A conference paper is not an essay!
–
It is representation of the content such that the reader
discovers something new that they could not learn from simply reading textbooks.
Various
styles are possible and acceptable, study existing papers for guidance as to structure.
▪
The full paper should be up to
3000 words in length
(6-8 pages), 11-point font.
▪
You should follow the given
IEEE Format (word file)
to write your paper and submit it in
word (.doc / .docx format) on the Moodle/Turnitin submission pages.
▪
Your full paper should have a title, abstract, introduction, main paper content (with
relevant sections, subsections, and headings), conclusions and references. Diagrams
should be placed within the main paper, labelled, and numbered
–
See Marking Criteria
▪
This is an
Engineering Supply Chains & Logistics
module assignment - Do not stray too far from
the theme of this module.
▪
If you make assertions, support them by providing evidence through referencing.
▪
Remember that this is an MSc programme, and your readers will be well informed on the basics
of the subject. Merely extracting and paraphrasing ideas from existing literature is unlikely to
attract high marks. Lengthy notes on basic concepts is a waste of your limited word count.
▪
Please
only use
the given IEEE Format (word file) document to complete your paper.
▪
Use the referencing style provided on the IEEE template.
▪
Avoid speculation along the lines of ‘this or that might be a good idea’. Focus on facts.
▪
Recommendations & Conclusions section
–
any report or study is not complete without proper
conclusions at the end
–
remember, its “conclusions” and not “summary”
- hence, you get
dedicated marks for this part.
