Name: ______ English 20-1 Johansson Essay Outline Essay Question: Discuss the idea(s) developed by the text creator in your chosen text about the impact of an individual’s ambition on self and others. Thesis Statement Practice: OPINION because reason one and reason two. Shakespeare demonstrates that individuals who are guided by their ambition will negatively change themselves and lose others because they are too focused on protecting their desire and no longer worry about the consequences of their actions. Introduction Hook (define the topic, a quote - not from the play, a statement, a fact) Ambition is a strong motivator that directs individuals to act based on their desires. T.A.G. (Author’s genre Title is about …) In William Shakespeare’s tragedy, Macbeth , he demonstrates how ambition directs a brave hero to become a villain and a traitor. Context (Who is your character and what is their conflict) Character: Macbeth is the Thane Of Glamis Conflict: He struggles with the decision of murdering King Duncan and his ambition starts to built up in his headcwhich led to him killing the King and to takes his place. Thesis OPINION because reason one and reason two. Shakespeare demonstrates that individuals who are guided by their ambition will negatively change themselves and lose others because they are too focused on protecting their desire and no longer worry about the consequences of their actions.
Body Paragraph 1 Topic Sentence (use the same language as your thesis and bring in your character) The character Macbeth shows that people will change negatively and others will suffer when they allow ambition to guide you because they are completely focused on protecting his ambition. (I.iv.53 ) Macbeth is trying to hide his ambition and “deep desires”(I.iv.53 ) because he has no guilt towards the death of the king which demonstrates how much his ambition has damaged him. Macbeth’s deep desire is an action for Macbeth and is affecting himself so he is no longer aware of what is moral or immoral; this is significant because it directly reflects him from a noble and a loyal warrior to what he is now. His ambition has made him lose his mind and a step closer to his death. Proof (Quote that is embedded - 1 to 3 words - do not set it up telling me what the character says) “Is this a dagger which I see before me, The handle toward my hand? Come, let me clutch thee”. (II.i.33) The “dagger'' plays with Macbeth's decision causing him to kill the king. The dagger is a symbol from the play that represents murder and death because it deeply shows the first murder of the play form a man that once was loyal. Killing the king while he was sleeping displays Macbeth's betrayal towards King Dunacan. Body Paragraph 2 Topic Sentence (use the same language as your thesis and bring in your character) In the play Macbeth demonstrates when individuals decided to follow their ambition, they will no longer care about the consequences of their action Proof (Quote that is embedded - 1 to 3 words - do not set it up telling me what the character says) “ Will all great Neptune's ocean wash this blood Clean from my hands” (II.ii.60) He expresses his guilt by saying that there will not be enough water from the “ocean” to “wash” off the blood on his hand . At this point of the play, he is expressing his guilt by saying there is not enough water in the ocean to wash the blood off his hands. He will never forget this wicked deed he has committed. The guilt that is now permanently identified Macbth’s personality because it showed that he really wanted to become king and would do anything to take his position. This betrayal throws Macbeth into a state of remorse pushing him to murder many others to satisfy his paranoia. Proof (Quote that is embedded - 1 to 3 words - do not set it up telling me what the character says) “Sword his wife, his babes, and all unfortunate souls that trace him in his line” (IV.i.158) Macduff leaving Macbeth represents a sense of betrayal causing Macbeth to “kill” Muduff’s wife and children. Macbeth has completely shifted in a way where he doesn't feel guilty or remorse for murdering anoyone. After he got his place as king, he started becoming cold-hearted, killing people that didn’t pose much concern to him. He is a man of action and since he is king, he no longer worries about the forces he is committing or what the consequences will be there for him in the end. Conclusion Thesis statement in new words Macbeth being caught up in his ambition caused has made him negitivelty transform himself to murder other surrounding him because he only cares about protecting his desire and less about his consequences of his actions. Final point for Body 1 Throughout the play, Macbeth’s character is overly ambitious and he was so focused on protecting himself to become king. After he becomes king, he allows his greed and ambition consume him and let anyone take his desire away from him. Final point for Body 2 The guilt that has taken hold of Macbeth motivating him to murder more and more people causing him to think no more of the effect that has finally reached him.
