2 The modes of persuasion refer to devices in rhetoric that categorize the appeal of the addresser(s)to the addressee(s) ( Movieclips, 2011, 0:56) . The modes of persuasion include pathos, logos, and ethos ( Movieclips, 2011, 1:11) . This paper, thus, provides evidence of employment of the aforementioned modes of persuasion in the film titled The Accuser. Logos Following the video provided for scrutiny, several instances displaying logos, pathos, and ethos occur. For example, logos- the logical appeal ( Movieclips, 2011, 1:36) . The addresser uses logic to persuade the audience that the complainant is unable to rationally identify her assaulters. The addresser claims that the complainant was under the influence of drugs such as marijuana and alcohol. Also, Miss Tobias was in a room full of noises from the television and other appliances. Yet, the complainant claimed that she could identify her assaulters based on the noises they made since her eyes were closed- occasionally. The addresser, therefore, avowed that based on reason, the circumstance Miss Tobias was in was not suitable for her to justly identify her assaulters. Pathos To persuade the audience, Miss Tobias visibly used emotions of pity and/or sadness. The complainant appeared distressed and crying. Her voice was wobbly due to crying. It had the ability to persuade the audience into believing that Miss Tobias was assaulted ( Movieclips, 2011, 2:13) . Ethos The mode of persuasion that appeals to the addressees by emphasizing both the credibility and authority of the addresser ( Movieclips, 2011, 2:26) . For instance, the addresser begins by introducing himself, consoling Miss Tobias, and promising to go easy on her by asking
3 only a handful of questions. In doing so, the addresser employs ethos by demonstrating authority. Also, the addresser appears to be representing the accused. Hence, signifying credibility as per the context.
