Sediqi 1 Sanam Sediqi Rhetoric of Song Essay COM 122 English Composition Section:21 09/26/23 Literary Devices of “Lost Stars”: "Lost Star by Adam Levine" contains many literary devices, but metaphors, pathos, and repetition stand out as the most prominent ones. There is a message in the song about everyone wanting to be accepted and recognized for who they actually are. (Jennifer) The lyrics mostly depict a person who specifically is looking for affection and desires to be accepted for who they really are rather than simply their ambitions and ideals, which shows that the lyrics basically represent a person who is looking to be loved and cared for by people, so they don’t feel like they are all alone. The appealing qualities of being genuine to yourself and not having apprehension to exhibit who you really are highlighted in the song. The very first literary device I would like to talk about is metaphor in the song Lost Stars, there were numerous cases where for the most part was intended in a major way. In one of the verses of the song, the singer says, "Just a speck of dust within the galaxy," illustrating how everyone wants recognition and acceptance. (Levine) Across the song, there is an allusion to feeling lost in the galaxy. The analogy involving being a particle of dust refers to each of us being a tiny light in the nighttime sky. This simply serves to inspire people to essentially find their purpose, demonstrating how the song discusses how everyone wants to be respected for who they want to be. This device often helps send out a better message and meaning to the audience.
Sediqi 2 Adam Levine's song Lost Stars demonstrates pathos as the second literary device. An example showing this statement to be true is Levine uses visuals of a "lion kissing a deer" and "Cupid's demanding back his arrow"(Levine) to generally evoke his audience's feelings through his word choice used in bis song. There is a lion, a predator, kissing a deer, a prey animal, in an absurd position for the most part. But by putting up this perspective, Levine solidifies his assertion that everyone should be free to communicate themselves authentically rather than being constrained by limitations others have set based on ideas. The example of an ironic circumstance suggests that what mostly appears to be very unattainable can in fact occur, and it could change the prevailing ideals by redefining the impossibility as an understanding of a "brand-new ending" rather than the barrier that one wouldn't ever for the most part have the privilege to pass in a subtle way. Levine shows a lot of emotion not only in his lyrics but in the way he sings his lyrics, this most definitely brings out emotion. The last sort of literary device important in this song is repetition. There were many points where the title of the song was repeated throughout the song. To emphasize the significance of having become a lost star in the globe, the title is generally repeated across the song subtly. It describes the extent to which we feel essentially lost in the environment and as if we're all different. Levine specifically tries to repeat the title of the song numerous times so that it could for the most part have a generally good rhythm and it could be catchy which is the whole point of songs in a major way. The artist uses these devices to show his own life moments or experiences in his music to show people how he’s feeling, which specifically shows that there are metaphors being utilized in this song. The parts of repetition could mean the important parts of the song that he wants his audience to know and feel.
Sediqi 3 In conclusion, the song Lost Stars by Adam Levine generally has discussed multiple different devices in a major way. But generally speaking, I felt like Metaphors, Pathos, and Repetition really were used most commonly, which is quite significant. Demonstrating that the song discusses how everyone wants to be accepted and recognized for who they really are, or so they are for the most part. The song discusses the dangers of positioning yourself in an untenable situation in a subtle way. Levine has used metaphor when comparing a speck of dust to the galaxy and how he portrayed it was with people wanting to be accepted, feel accepted, and feel like they are loved, for all intents and purposes. He also used pathos to not only show how he’s feeling but show how others feel as well and that there not alone in feeling this way, so in conclusion the song Lost Stars by Adam Levine has discussed fairly multiple different devices. The last device was repetition, and this is an important key part of the song because without repetition the song won’t be catchy, and it won’t have any rhythm to it which is why it essentially is used all through the song in different sections of the lyrics. All of these literary devices when combined together can make a big impact on what the artist is trying to persuade and or do to their audience. I say this because literary elements can help you convey your message especially when put into a song it could help the story that the artist is trying to put out and say to everyone.
