“Like A Rolling Stone” and its Sound and Rhythm
In this module, the two poems that caught my attention were "Like A Rolling Stone" by Bob Dylan and "Richard Cory" by Simon and Garfunkle. Both of these poems present a melancholic view of life and showcase the struggles of the working class in society. However, of
the two, I prefer "Like A Rolling Stone" because of its use of sound and rhythm.
"Like A Rolling Stone" is a song that is sung to a melody, and yet it is still a poem. The use of rhyme and rhythm in the song is what makes it so powerful (Smith 5). The song has a unique structure of six stanzas with four lines each. The rhyme scheme is AABB, and the meter is irregular. The song starts with a slow tempo, and as the song progresses, the tempo increases, making it more powerful and dynamic.
The use of sound in the poem is what sets it apart. The repetition of the phrase "how does
it feel" in each stanza creates a sense of continuity and reinforces the theme of the song. The repetition of the phrase "you're on your own" creates a sense of loneliness and despair. The use of alliteration in the lines "you've been with the professors and they've all liked your looks" creates a rhythmic and melodic quality to the poem. The use of assonance in "you never turned around to see the frowns on the jugglers and the clowns when they all did tricks for you" creates a musical quality that adds to the overall impact of the poem (Smith 6).

The song presents a powerful message about the struggles of the working class and the difficulties they face in a society that values wealth and status. The song's protagonist has lost everything and is now living a life of loneliness and despair. The song's message is that life is tough, and one must learn to survive on their own.
In conclusion, "Like A Rolling Stone" by Bob Dylan is the poem that I like best in this module. The use of sound and rhythm in the song creates a powerful impact and reinforces the theme of the poem (Smith 7). The song presents a powerful message about the struggles of the working class and the difficulties they face in society. The repetition of the phrase "how does it feel" and "you're on your own" creates a sense of continuity and reinforces the theme of the song. The use of alliteration and assonance adds to the musical quality of the poem and creates a sense of rhythm and melody that is unique to this poem (Smith 8).
